we watched it in 5th grade. the thing i most remember is that when the teacher hit play on day 2, there was something more of an adult nature playing on the VCR.

A great movie and a great book...Tom Wolfe book, well researched. The movie maybe a bit dressed up. But all those Stars in it. Even today when I see them in other things I still think of them as the Mercury Astronaut they played. In some cases they looked more like the real guys than the real guys did.
I think you can take the movie as a pretty good representation of the times, events and people.

From a historical standpoint, it's pretty accurate. I'd hate to say as about as accurate as most movies truly come.

I studied AERO in college so this movie keeps me ridiculously entertained!

I lived in Cocoa Beach, Florida in the mid to late '60's. Talk about space fever. It was great.

One of my first memories is standing in my front yard and my mom and dad telling me that the little rocket is going to the moon. The whole neighborhood was outside watching.

I've been watching From the Earth to the Moon, which features many of the same real-life characters, but when I've seen Alan Shepherd on screen, I'm thinking, WTF, that's not Scott Glenn!

The Right Stuff is a great movie and has withstood the test of time.

it certainly has stood the test of time. yeah it's made in 1983, but it's all staged in the late 40s to early 60s, so it doesn't feel dated at all.

Agree with what everyone else said. I'm not a big reader, but that book was awesome.
