Blasphemy. You do somewhat redeem yourself by putting Dazed and Confused in your top 20 though.

And seriously? Men in Black and Independence Day (two AWFUL movies) get an honorable mention, but Shawshank doesn't?

Seriously, take your movie snob attitude and shove it. He asked for my opinion. If you have an opinion, share it.

I saw Shawshank Redemption and considered it to be average at best. If you look at my list, you'll notice a preponderance of sci-fi and action/adventure type movies. This is what I like, along with war movies. If you don't like my list, post your own mf'ing list.

Amen Cinco, your list is different but very personal and solid, which I like. Great call with The Pelican Brief.

Just ignore the ones who can't respect opinions. That's why I purposefully pointed out that Shawshank wasn't on my list. I wanted to see the posters who can't respect opinions which is why I pointed it out not being on my list. (notice the haters can't even name a top 10 much less 20)

Relax, I just REALLY hate those movies, but to each his own. As for my list, I'm too lazy to do a top 20 (and because I know that I'd be leaving out movies I forgot about), but it would include many that have already been mentioned: Forrest Gump, Shawshank, Dazed and Confused, Saving Private Ryan, Fugitive. Might also throw in The Sandlot, Toy Story, Office Space, American History X, Se7ven, and others I'm sure I'm forgetting off the top if my head.

Interesting question with good lists.

I'd have to make a list of my top 100 of all time, and then pull out the 90s. There would only be 20 - 30 movies from the 90s on my all time list. My list would really only be about 3 1/2 decades. There are very few prior to 1975 that would make my list.

I'm guessing from most of these lists that they're a "My favorites of the 90s" as opposed to what we think are the actual BEST movies of the 90s.

It seems I just had this conversation with a neighbor regarding the definition of "fact" and "opinion" ... but wouldn't "My favorites of the 90s" = "what we think are the actual BEST movies of the 90s"

Who is deciding what the "actual BEST movies" are?

I typically get slammed for expressing my opinions on Episode I. Is it as good as Episode IV or V? No, but it was still a damn fine movie in my opinion. Note that last prepositional phrase there - "in my opinion". Everyone's got one as the saying kinda goes (leaving the other part of that saying off because I don't think people are a'holes for having differing opinions).

I listed my opinion above regarding movies of the 90s. From looking at other responses, I've overlooked some movies - Apollo 13 and the Toy Story movies come to mind immediately now. Great movie. I had some omissions that others have pointed out. Others have movies on their lists that I absolutely abhor but to each his own.

Is there a reason that The Matrix is being left off of everybody's list here.

I think it was an extremely influential movie both in pop culture and in movie making (i.e. special effects.)

Cinco Ag, I have no difficulties differentiating between what's a high quality film and what I personally find very entertaining. I assume you must get mad every year at the Oscars because movies like Old School and The Hangover don't get nominated or win for Best Picture? There's a difference between the best films and our favorites. Doesn't mean anybody should belittle others favorites, however.

You know what they say about assumptions? Those were two of the worst movies I've ever seen. Really good comedies died in the early 80s in my opinion. As for best picture, I quit giving a rat's behind when the Oscars became a political thing. One can argue legitimately whether Annie Hall truly was the best picture over Star Wars, but when you have presenter/winner after presenter/winner making all kinds of political statements - all of which I would likely disagree with - I just don't care. Those silly awards are essentially a big "look at me" photo op and are, again, opinions. I recognize that the winners are voted upon, and I don't have a problem with that; but I don't have to agree with the outcome of their votes, and those votes don't invalidate my own opinion.

I'd have picked Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Saving Private Ryan over the movies that did win best picture. I would not have picked Titanic. While Silence of the Lambs was a fine movie, I think I would have taken Beauty and the Beast that year because it was a more family-friendly, wholesome movie.

Your differentiation is an eye of the beholder thing

WTF are you talking about? Men in Black was amazing, what are you talking about? good action and lots of good humor with a good storyline. It would probably be towards the bottom of my 20 or in my 25 in the 90s at least. Men In Black 2 however, was garbage.

Any movie that gets recreated into a TV show or cartoon means that its good
