This...

I think I would have taken Beauty and the Beast that year because it was a more family-friendly, wholesome movie.

...explains alot.

Your differentiation is an eye of the beholder thing

I don't really think it does. Forget the Oscars, that was just one example of a forum for expressing professional opinions about quality filmmaking. Look at most any film reviewers and their opinions are largely going to be similar. Being a great film typically entails a whole range of factors, including good directing, good acting, good cinematography, great sets, screenplays, etc., etc. There are plenty of movies (such as comedies old or new) that are simply entertaining and enjoyable and that's great. Those are the kinds of movies I'm suggesting many here are calling their favorites. They just like them. But what I'm saying is a great film is one that excels in many areas, not just in entertainment value. It's entertaining but also well directed, acted, filmed, edited, etc., etc. It just excels in more ways than some other films. That's all.

"Why not just make a top 25 then?"

why worry if you can't even name any. We will do a top 5 for you. Can you even name 5?

Saving Private Ryan
Forest Gump
Jurassic Park
Shawshank Redemption
Pulp Fiction
Fight Club
Toy Story
Braveheart
The Silence of the Lambs
Schindler's List
Lion King

Off the top of my head, that's all I got as the BEST of the 90s. I can think of others but I don't think they are realistically worthy.

I need to see Braveheart. I have to admit I still haven't seen it.

You have time to post a ridiculous number of questions repetitively on multiple forums and you don't have time to watch Braveheart?

Would you say it was better than Gladiator? Gladiator is one of my favorite movies.

I would have to agree and I haven't even seen Braveheart, but there is no way it is better than Gladiator. Crowe > Gibson

Gazelle,
filmmaking is not mathematics. It is an entirely subjective medium. Some movies are so bad that they are actually considered good. Some are better crafted than others, some have better musical scores or better screenwriting, some have actors that are A list but have C list dialogue, and all that. But at the end of the day, it's still a matter of opinion as to what constitutes quality filmmaking (as opposed to mathematics, where we all know that 1+1 always = 2 unless of course you're Jesse Jackson pimping eubonics or whatever they called it).

As for your snide comment regarding Beauty and the Beast, exactly what does that explain (to you)? It was an excellent movie and was nominated for best picture, the only animated movie to receive such an honor.

I'd much rather see Hollywood bestow honors upon movies like that, that are wholesome and not full of foul language, overly gratuitous violence or sex, rather than many of the movies that are lauded. Take the year of B&B's release - '91. The BP winner was The Silence of the Lambs. It was an excellent movie. But it was also quite a disturbing movie and was not family-friendly.

Cinco, if you want to live in make-believe land and can't handle adult themes or mature stories, even if disturbing, then I can't help you. So would you say Schindler's List is a bad movie because the violence was "gratuitous" and it dealt with a disturbing topic? Obviously most action flicks are gratuitous, have thin plots and weak acting and that's why those aren't considered good movies, even though they may be entertaining to some.

As for filmmaking and mathematics, I agree it's subjective what we like or don't like, but you seem to think that its all politics that decides what movies get recognized by awards shows/film critics/etc. each year. While subjective to some degree, you can be sure that at the end of each year, the movies up for Best Picture (as an example) are probably going to be among the top 10 or 20 films of the year by almost any critic. There's a general consensus on which are the top 10-20, but from among those, there will be some differences of opinions. All of those top films generally have strong writing, directing, cinematography, acting, etc. If it was entirely subjective as you think, then you'd expect almost every critic would have a completely different set of favorites.

Tell me, look at the AFI Top 100 films of all time. Do you think that's a ridiculously subjective list?

This is called the "Kids' Choice Awards", and it airs on Nickelodeon every March.

Among my favorite movies are Alien, The Thing, Halloween, and a number of other movies with lots of killing, explosions, and mayhem. I think I can handle adult themes, violence, gore and all that. I don't let my daughter watch any of these kind of movies though.

The reason I have harped on this is that so much out of Hollywood does seem to lift up or promote the bad stuff. On occasion it would be good to extol the virtues of movies that don't fit that mold.

Please tell me where I said anything about politics (perhaps I did but I don't recall). I do think the awards shows are incredibly political, but that's more from the presenters and winners rather than some political bias in which movies get nominated.

07, I am guessing you don't have kids. When you do, try raising them without exposing them to all this garbage in the movies these days. It's a near impossibility.

I wouldn't say ridiculously but it is subjective. It is a compliation of opinions that happen to mesh, and many I agree with by the way, but it is still a list of opinions.

I listed Schindler's List in my list of best of the 90s, so clearly i don't think it to be a bad movie. Try going to Washington to the Holocaust Museum and step into the actual rail car they have there and then think about that movie, and you will realize just how important that movie is to telling a real-life story. And that museum will bring to life the absolute horror that the Nazis put upon these people, much more so than the movie ever could.

L.A. Confidential is hands down the best movie of the 1990s. I'm too lazy right now to name the other 19, but Gattaca would be in there somewhere.

America's destiny is not of our own choosing. We did not seek nor did we provoke an assault on our freedom and our way of life. We did not expect nor did we invite a confrontation with evil. Yet the true measure of a people's strength is how they rise to master that moment when it does arrive.
