Did you not discover till after you were 20, and they existed before you were 20?

I want to say Foo Fighters for me, because even though I was aware of them in the 90's in high school and college, I hated them, based solely on the fact that I hated nirvana's music and I hated their first single they released (the one that they made like a mentos commercial in the video).

Later in my 20's though, after giving them another shot, I discovered I really do like them.

Good question. I'd have to say the pre-pop version of Genesis (up to Seconds Out).

I would say Pearl Jam

Of course I knew they existed, but they went from barely being on my radar to being my favorite current band over the last 7 years or so

I didn't know much about Uncle Tupelo or Wilco.

Oddly enough, I did have a Son Volt CD.

Same could be said about The Flaming Lips and Whiskeytown.

Red Hot Chili Peppers. In middle/high school their popular song was Love Roller Coaster. I hated that song. It wasn't until their album, By The Way, that I gave them a chance and went back to "discover" some of their older songs.

I had heard Radiohead, but did not really get into them until I was 20-21. That would have been ~2000-01.

Hmmm. Probably G-Love but I honestly don't have an album yet. He's one of those artists that has been around forever, and over the past couple of years I'll hear a song and say "Man, I MUST get a G-Love album". It's one of those blanks I draw though when I walk into a CD store and want to randomly pick something out.

.ACDC - explanation needed, didn't care for them until late in early 2000's, particularly Bon Scott era (in fact, used to make fun of med school buddy who was obsessed with them -- now feel very inferior to him for his foresight and dedication).

Same here. I think I had heard Drown from the first SV album and picked that for one of my many fraudulent Columbia House memberships.

Picked up a used copy of Being There at Marooned Records one day, but still didn't "discover" Uncle Tupelo until a couple years later.

Old 97's.

Countless other old acts I knew about but didn't take time to appreciate until more recently, like Van Morrison.

man, i see pearl jam, stp, foo fighters, RHCP, tool on here..

we must have some young fools on this board! When I was in middle school when these bands blew up, there was no getting away from them.. no way you could have gone through the early 90's without knowing about them.. not like wilco or something.
well unless you were 3 years old.. which i guess is the situation with some of you folks.

'Big Me'... it was about their 3rd single actually this is a call, i'll stick around

i guess i'll answer the question.
two bands which are currently fav's:

Opeth. didn't find out about them until I was about 25, they had been around for 5 albums before that.

also, muse, since showbiz came out when i was 19, didn't find out about them until absolution.

Ya same for me. That's why I hated the Foo Fighters at first along with any other band the grungers liked, because I hated grungers with a passion. I hated everything they stood for, I hated their long hair. I just hated them. So I wouldn't even consider listening to any music they enjoyed.

Of course I was only listening to rap back in those days.

Great.

I wouldn't trade my days of just me and my Pac albums for anything.

One of the best artists to ever exist.

The Flaming Lips.

I knew about them in my teens, but I never really got in to them. Then The Soft Bulletin came out in 1999 and I immediately became a fan.

I think some of us interpreted the question differently. I was in high school when Tool first came out and I was aware of them. However, I didn't actually get into them until the Aenima album in 96/97. So the question is, does discover mean when you first heard them, or when you first discovered their brilliance?
