By a little spot where he and Clara had a picnic. They quarreled there. He wanted what she wouldn't give, and she wanted what he didn't have. But he felt tender about the place.

Come on... seriously. The acting sux, the special effects sux, most of it is too far fetched. Duval can't act... he is the same character in EVERY movie he is in. Tommy Jones isn't to far behind him. Freaking Ricky Schroder/Richy Rich is in it...

I remember watching it as a kid when it came out, so I couldn't remember much about it... so I tried watching it the other day. Made it half way through #2 and couldn't finish. The person watching it with me, who thought it was one of the great westerns in their mind but hasn't seen it in a long time, agreed... they couldn't finish it either.

O.K., through venting, sorry! Flame away

Anyone who doesn't like Lonesome Dove is a communist. But I can agree with you on Unforgiven, it's pretty forgettable.

It was made in the 80's and it was a made for TV movie. When have any made for TV movie blown you away with acting and special effects?

Yes he can act! And maybe he does play the same role, but this one is the best...

In westerns he plays the same character and he can act.

Actually, Duval became that character AFTER Lonesome Dove. He went to West Texas and spent some time with Slinging Sammy Baugh to develope the manerisums.

But, as Duval says, Lonesome Dove is the American Hamlet and it gave him the greatest role he ever had.

Most of it was filmed on location in Texas. Some, like the night time horse herd chase were actually done at night and to most Cinama guys pretty much a wonder of it's time.

But, you do realize it was made for Televsion and not a theatrical movie...don't you?

I thought the characters were true to the book and some of the scenes, mostly those where sombody died, like Jake Spoon hanged were some of the best ever done. Duval absolutly awesome in that one.

I'm not sure I ever met anybody who didn't think Lonesome Dove the best Western made for TV movie ever done and many think it the best Min-series ever done.

And I don't trust a man who doesn't! I just as soon RENT PIGS as know a man like that!

Fine, it can have all the tv mini series props you want to give it. But when you are talking about real westerns... come on.

Sorry, have to agree to disagree.

Sorry for the hijack - carry on.

Unforgiven was great because it was an anti-western. It didn't glorify the violence and revenge. The point was that killing is cyclical, they kill one of yours and you kill one of theirs and so on and so on. Also dudes didn't just get shot and die quietly, the kid they shot during the gunfight in the rocks actually took quite a bit of time to die and he screamed the entire time.

One of my favorite lines of all time
"It's a hell of a thing killing a man, take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have"

Lonesome Dove it's self was a different Western than had ever been done. It was by in large a whole different way to look at Texas and those who had won the frontier.
While not the "anti-western" it's method of story telling and the story it's self was probably it's reason for such popularity. The combining and humanization of a number of Texas historical figures as older men, sort of past their prime, with their regrets of the past and their last search for adventure as basically a new appraoch.
That it was not a "Shoot em up" Good guys vs. bad guys sort of western was not lost on the book buying or movie watching public....with the except of a few, here duely noted.

Does anyone else get bothered by that fact that when discussing the story of Lonesome Dove, everyone raves about how the movie is the greatest thing of all time? But those that have read the book, the Pulitzer Prize winning book, know that this is the greatest piece of literature since God's Holy Bible...
I guess I'm very partial and committed to the book that it always rubs me wrong that the movie gets all the love. Anyone else feel this way that has read the book?

Actually, I have read the book (and the other three, as well.)

I do think Lonesome Dove is one of the best ever American novels, regardless of genre.

I also think the movie (miniseries) is a very good representation of the book. And the cast is amazing..."just a miniseries" doesn't get that lineup. The movie deserves all the props it gets. Be realistic...this is America, people watch movies. They're too lazy to read.

I've read the other 3 books as well. How much of a let down was Commache Moon mini series? That book was my second favorite of the series and I was really looking forward to that mini series.

I haven't seen the other mini-series. Just the trailers made me think they weren't going to get the job done. I think I actually DVR'd Comanche Moon, but the DVR crapped out before I got a chance to watch it.

I agree with barney94's 1st statement. One of the best American novels...

From looking at their filming locations, I would say it is somewhere in New Mexico. There is a great website to find all kinds of movie trivia. imdb.com Go look at it.
