I would have given him props if he took out 80% of the CG and went old school. He mutilated it with CG.

So you're giving him credit for what happened with a reboot of his franchise, and idea he would have despised, 20 years after he had died?

Epic fail is not at all what the prequels were. Episode III was as good as the best of the origials, Episode V. Episodes I and II were the weakest of the entire series but were still far better movies than a lot of the crap being put out there these days.

Spiderman III ... that's EPIC FAIL
Batman and Robin ... that's EPIC FAIL
A Thin Red Line ... EPIC FAIL
Wing Commander ... EPIC FAIL

in fact, Star Trek Insurrection ... EPIC FAIL

I doubt Roddenberry would have appreciated this new Star Trek movie. And Lucas himself said on many occasions that the reason he started at the back half of his saga was that he didn't think people would like the opening half. (Had Episode I come out in '77 I doubt there would have been Episode II in '80).

Your opinion is so much FAIL that you can't see any light at the end of the tunnel.

Why the HATE for the prequels, especially that one? You'd think that somehow it was not George Lucas who did them, but George W Bush who made those movies.

Because the acting is almost as bad as the dialogue.

It's the CG for me...not the storyline. I don't even like him adding CG into the originals. It just took away the value for me. NoAC, you're the expert right? Didn't George have the whole story written before making Ep 4,5,6? I think he wasted an opportunity to create the most epic prequels in history by screwing it up with CG.

That's why I think the Star Trek franchise made out like bandits. They were able to reinvent the franchise with the CG, not eff it up.

Three words:

General Jar Jar

That was so bad that I considered walking out. I'm typically someone who makes fun of those who walk out of movies. You know, you paid for the ticket, and even if it's bad, it's not like you'd accomplish much with those 40 minutes you're wasting watching this movie, you're not proving a point to anyone by walking out because nobody cares that you walked out but you, etc. But in that case, I really almost did just get up, flip the bird to the screen and walk out. That Lucas would not only bring Jar Jar back, despite the fact that everyone absolutely hated that character, but that he would go so far as to make Jar Jar a general, after having already established that he was so stupid that he was exiled form his home world, was such so ridiculous that I felt personally insulted.

And that's without mentioning the godawful, terrible, atrocious, grating, dragging, romantic scenes. The actors should have quit to save face.

"I hate sand. Its rough and course...and it gets everywhere. But here everything is soft...and smooth."

Ughhhh. That's like dialogue from the 70's porn tapes I used to steal from out of my father's closet when I was a kid. Those scenes were so bad I was embarrassed to be in the theater seeing them.

wrong.

of course you're entitled to your opinion but I have to agree with the previous poster on the FAIL. Episode III was the best of the prequels but it was hardly better than the originals. All of the prequels have too much CGI, moo many cameos by big names in addition to the ghey explanations of back story.

It's the best of the prequels. Much like the way I'd rather be kicked in the butt than in the crotch or the head.

the Star Wars prequels were atrocious.

Ep III was decent on its own merits, but not great by any means.

the trio of poor acting, poor writing, and the horrible new graphics totally effed up the prequels.

Technically, Star Trek wasn't really a prequel... what comes after it are things we have not yet seen. What we have seen never actually occurs now.

Empire Strikes Back will be better than anything Roddenberry ever did. same with raiders.

It should be noted that Lucas had almost nothing to do, creatively, with Empire Strikes Back, and when he fired those responsible for IV and V and took the reigns starting with Jedi, things went downhill from there.

The fact that Episodes III and VI are comparable in their quality is as much a slam on Jedi as it is praise for Sith.

everyone loves one or the other for different reasons. what i love about star trek is that gene's vision lead to 700+ hours of earth's future over 250 or so years. i could give a crap less about what happened in a galaxy far far away.
it might have to deal with when we grew up also. i was too young for star wars in theatres but i can see how it must have hooked kids if they saw the first when they were around 10. i was almost 7 when tng premiered and i never missed an episode on monday nights.
also if one were to watch star trek 4 hours a night it would take about half a year to view it all.

To each his own on opinions of the Star Wars movies. I happen to think that Star Wars (the saga) is the best thing I've ever seen. There are certain parts that aren't as good as others but in the whole it is a great series of movies.

I also kinda snicker when people claim that the reason they hate the prequels is because of the bad acting and dialogue. Here's a news flash for you - the dialogue was equally bad in the original series. Even Harrison Ford had some kind of quote where he told Lucas that "you can write this crap but you can't speak it".

Lucas had a big hand in each of these movies, including V and VI. Those were the only 2 that he turned over to others for directorial and writing duties. Empire is the best-written of all of them. For everyone knocking Jar Jar Binks (yes, he was irritating), take another look at Jedi and tell me what you think of George's great invention for that movie - the teddy bear!

CGI - well, it is what it is. I don't share in the opinion that CGI destroyed the prequels. But take a look at video copies of the originals, and watch closely. In many shots you can actually see the mattes they had to use to overlay the film images of those models. These mattes appear as translucent boxes around the Millennium Falcon or the X-Wings, or the snowspeeders in Empire. In some shots you can even see the mounting rods attached to the back of the models. Does that ruin the effect of those shots? Hardly, but it can be distracting.

I was 10 when Episode IV came out, so I was the perfect age for that movie's target audience. The entire saga had a tremendous impact on my life. Empire had always been my all-time favorite movie, and in fact it remains there but I've added Sith to that list. Sith was closest in tone to the original series, and for all those years when my over-active imagination would spin ideas for what would happen to all the Jedi, to Obi Wan and Anakin, I felt that Sith captured nearly everything that I envisioned. It was an incredibly satisfying culmination of a lifetime of movie watching.

You do know that George Lucas wrote and directed Star Wars, right? So I fail to see how he fired those responsible for IV and V.

Lucas has said that he was burned out after IV. He hired Leigh Bracket to write Empire, but this gal died at some point before the screenplay was done, at which point Lucas hired Lawrence Kasdan to finish it up. Kasdan of course went on to write Jedi and Raiders of the Lost Ark before directing Silverado.

Lucas had decided to not direct any more movies, so he hired Irvin Kershner to helm Empire and Richard Marquand to direct Jedi. Notice also in this time frame that he had pitched his idea for something better than James Bond (Indiana Jones) to his pal Steven Spielberg for Stevie to direct (the James Bond reference is that Stevie wanted to do a Bond movie but George had something better).
