I'm willing to bet at least one of these will top $100mil in its first weekend...if I had to guess on one, I'd say Star Trek

Star Trek is getting an all out media blitz, but there's just a bigger comic book crowd than a Trekkie crowd. IMO Wolverine has a better shot.

From the reviews I've heard, many people have said that the ST movie is very accessible to non-Trekkies. The film makers have also said this was the goal.

Yeah, for sure. I mean, I'm probably gonna see it and I've never seen anything Star Trek in my life. But for opening weekend, I don't think it'll beat Wolverine. It'll have stronger legs and make more money in the end though.

I think Terminator will do better than $75 mil on OW

I hope it does. If there's anything I lowballed in my predictions it's Terminator.

IMO you are all overestimating Wolverine. This movie looks absolutely terrible, and frankly I think it might kill the Origins franchise. It might open to $75MM, but will drop off the face of the planet when Trek opens the following weekend.

For the record:
Wolverine: $75MM Open, $150MM Total
Star Trek: $80MM Open, $250MM Total
Angels & Demons: $60MM open, $150MM Total
Terminator: Salvation: $100MM open (5-day - its going to be PG13, which helps), $225MM Total
Night at the Museum: $80MM Open, $220MM Total
Up: $70MM open, $230MM Total

Terminator: Salvation is going to be rated PG-13. That alone will send it over $100 million.

I really hope that the Wolverine reshoots improves the ending. If they don't, I'd say that bad word-of-mouth will sink this film. However, opening weekend will be HUGE.

Wolverine: $85MM open. $175MM total (but that's depending on the reshoots being good)
Star Trek: $75MM open. $200MM total (should easily be the biggest Trek ever)
Angels & Demons: $50MM open. $115MM total (I think entuhusiasm for this one isn't great)
Terminator Salvation: $110MM open. $250MM total.
Night at the Museum 2: $75MM open. $215MM total (family movie will have good legs)
Up: $65MM open. $215MM total (Pixar movie will start slow and build)

Will anything match TDK?

Here is what I think.

Up-60 million open, 215 gross.
Star Trek-95 million open, 281 gross.
Xmen Wolverine-90 million open, 250 gross.
Angels and Demons-65 million open, 190 gross.
Terminator 110 million open, 315 gross.
Night at the Musuem-75 million open, 225 gross.

Not until the next Batman movie. That was a Titanic-esque perfect storm of Heath Ledger's death, a fantastic movie and little competition.

Wow, nobody is listing Transformers? Transformers will top the box office this summer, mark it down.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I can't believe I forgot about TF2.

Transformers 2: $115MM open (biggest of summer). $255MM total (also biggest of summer).

I also want to amend my Wolvie prediction. Apparently, the leaked workprint included the reshot scenes, meaning it ain't gettin' any better than that cut.

Wolverine: $85MM open (still will open huge). $150MM total. This has all the signs of another 'Hulk' (open big, then drop 70% it's next week and fade away).

I'm sticking by my predictions for Wolverine in terms of opening weekend, but I probably way overshot it in total box office. Expected it to actually be good.

Early reports are putting Wolverine at around $90M for the weekend.

quote:
SUMMER MOVIES START WITH A HOWL: 'Wolverine' Opens Huge To $35M Friday For Possible $90M Weekend; 'Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past' $6.5M For Maybe $17M

SATURDAY 1 AM: Even rival studios are saying it's possible for the franchise prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine to scoop up $90M this weekend if moviegoing stays strong, though a safer bet might be $85M. (Photos by Jim Stevenson: audience for 9:45 PM show at Vista Theatre in Los Feliz.)

FRIDAY 10 PM UPDATE: Sources tell me that Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine had a stunning $35 million debut Friday thanks in part to heavy attendance at tonight's shows and the studio's widest release ever into 4,099 theaters. That includes the $5 million midnight shows at 2,000 venues.) Comparables include Iron Man, which made $39M its opening Friday, and Fast & Furious which earned $30.5M.

I thought 95 million, but it will fall off quickly next week. What do you think shark?

I know Harry Potter doesn't come out in May, but should do well also

That was my guess as well, but I thought it would have stronger legs before it came out. Now I think it'll fall of pretty quick as well. Star Trek will punch it in the kisser and it'll never recover.

early sunday numbers point to wolverine at $87 mil

How long do you want to ignore this user?
$72M predicted for Star Trek this weekend

A little less than my prediction but pretty solid. I think it'll end up making more than Wolverine domestically though. Word of mouth is light years better, and it'll have a much slighter drop off next weekend.

Terminator is probably the only one that I must see opening day. Since I seem fall in line with the average moviegoer on most movie opinions I think Terminator will have the biggest opening weekend and total gross.
