I know there are a thousand threads on this already, but I enjoyed it MUCH better the second time around. This isn't unusual for me.

Originally, I went into the movie for sheer entertainment value, and came out feeling a little cheated by the ending. I read a number of reviews and realized there was more to the movie than I allowed. It made for a much better experience the second time around. I may even read the book now.

I'm glad you feel this way.

I think the trailer may have misled some ppl and made them feel they were going to see one movie and came away with a different impression.

This film was like an intricate onion. Plenty of layers, you just gotta keep peeling.

"Sure is a mess ain't it sherriff?"
"If it ain't, it'll do 'till the mess gets here."

Bought the DVD yesterday and watched it. One of best movies I have ever seen.

Texans should be proud of the performance that TLJ put on. He really did Texans proud. I don't recall ever seeing a portrayal of the easy going, slow drawl Texan with dialogue that is both culturally Texas yet very intelligent and witty. I hope that makes sense.

His character reminds of a number of Texans I have known and know today.

I saw it in the theater and really liked it. I plan on renting it soon to hopefully find small intricacies that I missed the first time around.

Yes, Tommy Lee Jones was fantastic. He had a lot of making-up to do after that stupid tu sorority abomination he did a couple of years ago!!!

The music for There Will be Blood ruined the picture for me. The plot was weak as well IMO. DDL definitely deserved the Oscar for Best Actor however.

I really liked the music a lot actually. I've heard other people say they didn't like it either though and it 'bothered' them during the movie.

I have to admit that I was let down by the ending to NCFOM at first, too. But shortly after seeing it, I had dinner with a friend who had not seen it. And as I was telling him about the movie, I realized that I was beginning to appreciate it more. It seems that trying to explain it brought out some things that I had not given deep thought to. Now I am anxious to see it again.

I think this is the first movie that has actually grown on me without even having to watch it again.

the music througout the movie was perfect for the setting, at the time. it was a little over-the-top at times, but it fit, really well.

not to pile on, but the music in TWBB was stunning, and perfect.

NCFOM was amazing.

I missed it in the theater, but rented it and watched it on Saturday night and again the next morning.

I saw No Country, and I see no reason for the praise.

What did I miss?

Philo,

My opinion was similar after the first time, but I read a few reviews and enjoyed it far better the second time around. I realized there was more to it than just wanton violence.

And I agree the Jones and Brolin were both very good.

**mild spoilers(?)**

finally saw this one today. really liked all of the characters, and the darkness of the movie...but i can understand how some may not like it...(mainly because it doesn't necessarily "wrap up" in the end) anton's character was definitely one of the weirdest, darkest, creepiest i have ever seen in a movie.

thanks to all who posted links and opinions...those really helped me piece it all together. the wikipedia entry for this movie gave some insight to some things i didn't see otherwise, in case anyone's interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Country_for_Old_Men_(film)

i am curious about one thing though...the scene in which the sheriff stops the guy in town, and looks and sees "bodies" on the back of the truck? what was that all about? (i admit i was a little distracted by work stuff during most of the movie, and plan to go back and watch at least a second time)

It was the bodies from the drug deal gone bad. That's a guy that went and picked 'em up for the sheriff's dept. The reason they were in the back of a truck was, like he said, there weren't any vans they had with 4 wheel drive.

Another recent movie that Tommy Lee Jones was in that he excels in is The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada.

TLJ sucks as a human being and as a texan.

As an aside, has anyone here besides me actually used a Schermer stunner?

The one I used was not air powered like Anton's though. It was powered by a gunpowder cartridge.

Texans should be proud of the performance that TLJ put on.

You realize that he IS a Texan, right? From San Saba (or thereabouts).

great movie but the guy is a ****head

Why, ht, do you say he's a ****head?

According to the special features "Making of..." they based the "stunner" he was using off of the actual one. It wasn't supposed to be the real thing, but something homemade and turned into an actual weapon. Something a "calculated killer" would use.

great movie except for the lack of any conclusion. i know it's cool to like certain movies, but stories are supposed to have endings. this doesn't even pretend to have an ending, nor leave any type of option for you to make a conclusion on your own. how is that a good thing?

*spoilers*

I think that one theme in the movie was the competing worldviews of the three main characters but particularly Moss and Chigur. Chigur was a complete nihilist and he lived in a way which was honest to his beliefs. The Woody Harrelson character said that Chigur had principles and in a warped way, he did. Chigur actually lived his life in a way that reflected his true beliefs. And the only "good" that he ever did was offer someone life according to "chance".

Bell was a man who really didn't have belief in any objective good either. I remember there was a line where he said something to the effect of he was waiting for God but God never showed up. But he continued to live as if there was a reason to be good and do the right thing. He was inconsistent in the way he lived.

I'm not entirely sure what Moss' worldview was. He just seemed to be a survivalist and opportunist more than anything.

That is my attempt at deconstructing the film and I could be completely wrong but that's what I got from one showing and reading the wiki article. All in all I think the movie was well made but I didn't really like the tone/message, I found it depressing and hopeless.
