"Chop Suey" by System of a Down is about a girl being raped... my high school teacher actually told a group of us that. They're music is really political, if you take the time and listen to them.

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I find a window in the kitchen,
And I let myself in.
Rummage through the refrigerator,
Find myself a beer.
I can't believe I'm really here
And she's lying in that bed.
I can almost feel her touch
And her anxious breath!

I stumble in the hallway
Outside her bedroom door.
I hear her call out to me.
I hear the fear in her voice.
She pulls the covers tighter.
I press against the door.

I will be with her tonight .

Sounds like attempted rape at the very least.

Exactly what that song is about.

Jigsaw Girl from the Toadies is about a guy who keeps body parts of his ex gf spread around his apartment. I thought it was pretty obvious, but I know alot of people who had no idea.

quote:

Give me your hand and I will hold it forever
On my nightstand in a box with your love letters
I love you dear, and I know we will not be parted
I'll keep you near, scattered around my apartment
This is not the same world you lived in
And I could breathe easier once I brought you back again
You are not the same girl you had been
I promised I'd never lose you

Give me your hair, just a lock will do
An old photograph to capture the spirit of you
And I'll keep these things wrapped up in an old cotton blouse
The one you wore that summer before your love petered out
This is not the same world you lived in
And I could breathe easier once I brought you back again
You are not the same girl you had been
I promised I'd never lose you

Laid on my bed
A beautiful mess
My whole world
Jigsaw girl
You gave me your hand
You gave me your hand
I don't understand why you don't want it back

This is not the same world you lived in
And I could breathe easier once I brought you back again
You are not the same girl you had been
I promised I'd never lose you
Honey I tell you true I'll never lose you..

"The country song Strawberry Wine is about statutory rape."

Umm, no...the song is about a 17 yr old girl's first love. You can make the case that her age and 'loss of innocence' constitutes statutory rape, but that's not what the song is 'about'.

Another one Bites the Dust was released in 1980 so I'm thinking nope

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIDS#Origin_of_HIV
quote:
AIDS was first reported June 5, 1981, when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded a cluster of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (now still classified as PCP but known to be caused by Pneumocystis jirovecii) in five homosexual men in Los Angeles.[135]

While people were getting and dying of it before then, it certainly want's well know and I doubt a rock band would be writing songs about something pretty unknown to everyone but some scientists at the CDC.

Another hidden one:

"American Idiot" by Green Day is a song all about Brent Musberger.
Ulrich
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The phrase "Bye bye Miss American Pie" refers to Marilyn Monroe's death, plus the death of the idealistic '50s (via the phrase "American as apple pie" ), or that is what I have heard. Actually, that song is really interesting. Hard to tell exactly what he is talking about in several places.

The quote I heard (and have no way of knowing if it is correct) was: "I'm not homosexual, I'm not heterosexual, I'm just sexual."

Tyler is about rape, Possum Kingdom is about vampires. There is no secret to either. Lyrics to Tyler already posted.

SOAD is EXTREMELY political. Again, not a secret or a surprise.

I was a bit shocked when I figured out who anti-American "Bullet the Blue Sky" is...still love The Joshua Tree though.

From my previous post on Tyler, follow that link:

"It's not about vampires," Umbarger insists. "Even though we have a big
underground vampire following in Florida. They come with their teeth and
everything. I'm not lying about that, that's a real story. They'll show up
and you'll be talking to someone, and they'll smile and it's like, 'Jesus
Christ! You've got fangs!' And they're like, 'Yeah. It's a vampire thing.'
So we have this big vampire underground following, and 'Possum Kingdom' has
kind of stirred it up."
So what's it really about, then?
Not missing a beat, Lewis replies: "Vampires."
Laughter breaks out yet again. "It's just a story I heard long ago;
it's just a really cool, eerie lake, and some stuff I heard and some stuff I
just make up. I tend to do that," Lewis explains about the watering hole
where his family used to hang out and barbecue. "They dammed up this big
river up there, and it's got all these spooky names like Hell's Gate. It's
really cool."

So it is and it isnt. Its whatever you want it to be. I've always interpreted it as a murder.

I found it interesting that he wrote that album while going thru a divorce. Mix that with growing up Baptist, and there is a lot of rage he let out on that record.

Interesting. I always assumed otherwise. Listening to the lyrics it would be hard to believe that they weren't on some mind altering drugs when composing.

Someone asked about "Stairway"...it's sort of convuluted, starts off as a kiss-off to women who always get what they want and don't appreciate things, then ends up basically as a "song of hope".

Next time really listen to the lyrics of Don't Stand So Close To Me. I know a lot of people who don't realize what that song is about when it's really obvious.

"Young teacher . . . the subject . . . of school girl fantasy."

Ever heard of the book Lolita by Nabokov? Sting, being a former English teacher, was obviously more well read than you.

and if they were gay, why were they singing about "fat-bottomed girls"

In England, a "fat-bottomed girl" is slang for a prostitute. I guess this could be construed as a f@g hag somehow...

Not denying that, in fact, some of the lyrics really sound like they are talking about prostitution in the song. But, I do know that there is a race somewhere in the United Kingdom, that they have a fat-bottomed girls bike race where girls with fat bottoms ride naked.

If you listen to the song, you do hear references to this race, and I think I did hear an interview a long time ago about the correlation between the song and the race.

The song "American Pie" by Don McLean is basically a history of rock 'n roll. It references many artists threw out the song. For example "the players tried for a forward pass with the jester on the side line in a cast" These lyrics are referencing Bob Dylan when he was in a motor cycle accident and could not perform for a year. The "jester" is refrenced several times in the song and all seem to be talking about Bob Dylan.
