never mind, I just read this whole cotton-picking thread. I think I agree with a combination of what everyone has said.

I understand it, and the meaning was good, but I still wish it would have ended differently

In answer to a question posed early in this thread by chris 1515, I think referring to a County Sheriff of Commanche County as having been Sheriff up in Comanche County is a common, proper way to do it.

The town of Commanche is in Commanche County, but the County Sheriff serves the whole county and may not even live in that town.

I loved this movie, but it reminded me a lot of 'The three burials of Melquiades Estrada', a TLJ direction. Lots of simularities, allegorically and visually.

Just watched it again, and although I liked it the first time, I agree that it's better the second time around.

I read this thread about 15 minutes before starting it tonight and notice a few misrepresentations that fit theories however.

When TLJ see the lock blown at the Motel, he prepares himself mentally and draws his weapon. I didn't take it as he wanted to die. He just didn't really know what to prepare for. The common theme throughout the movie for him is confusion. He just doesn't know what he's dealing with. He didn't feel like it was his duty to die or anything, he just wasn't really sure what he was fighting or how to fight it.

Same scene, there is mention in one theory of the dime on the floor, as if Chigur flipped a coin to decide to kill TLJ or not. That's not the case, as the dime was only evidence that he had found the money in the vent.

In all honesty, this movie confused me at parts the first time, but watching the second time, a lot of things are explicitly spelled out, almost as if it's hitting us in the head. I agree with a lot of the ideas of what the movie symbolizes, but I also think maybe sometime we interpret movies to be deeper than they actually are intended to be.

Great movie. Well made, great casting, great camera work, and I think the Coens exhibit their genius once again. But, I think some theories about this movie are looking for things that aren't there.

One other thing, one common theme for TLJ is his struggle with his own relationship with God. But oddly, it's not as if he doesn't believe God exists, just that he feels God has no use for him. The first time I saw it, I took the last dream scene to touch on this feeling, but I couldn't figure out how. Did he feel that his father was in Heaven waiting for him? Or was his father in Hell waiting for him? Or was his father a symbol f God himself, who rides off ignoring him and forcing him to fend for himself.

This time, I'm closer to agreeing with the thought I read on this thread, that he's holding out hope that his Dad will be able to explain all of this insanity to him when he reaches the other side, (which is why it's peculiar since his Dad is the younger man), but then he realizes that some things just can't be explained, hence the line, "Then I woke up."

Great movie!!! Makes my hometown look pretty creepy though.

The movie I think is supposed to represent the type of criminal some West Texas lawmen come across. It is troubling to many of the old timers who are still there. They have never dealt with people who are so reckless and will kill someone at the drop of a hat.

When TLJ arrives at the hotel you can see Chigurh's reflection in the lock. TLJ draws his gun (presumably for the 1st time in his career) but gives a half hearted search for Chigurh. Remember Chigurgh doesn't kill those who don't see him and TLJ's dreams show that he was worried about a final judgement for not getting Chigurh and that he does not understand the world anymore.

The dime is definitely for getting the money from the vent.

Finally got around to watching this last night, thought it was a great movie. It's been a while since I have been thinking about a movie the next day.

Thought the casting was excellent, very well acted. Loved the cinematography, the feel of the time it was set in the place and the native Texan accents were fantastic.

Good stuff.

One thing that annoys me is that TLJ's willingness to let Chigurh go allows him to go kill what's his name's wife. I think she was more brave than he was.

But... did he really kill her? It's kind of like the end of The Departed. There are theories.

I think the fact that he checked the bottom of his boots after leaving the house pretty much sealed the deal.

Good thing we have to read the book to get the movie. It's ridiculous that this would be necessary to really get a completion of a movie...

You have to be an idiot to have needed to read the book to get that he killed her.

I'm kind of surprised no one has mentioned the scene where TLJ talks to the old man (Ellis I think?) in the wheelchair. Someone had mentioned that TLJ feels that the world is changing and that the old time things like honor and such didn't exist anymore. It was one of my favorite parts of the movie when the old man looks TLJ in the eye and says, "What you got ain't nothin' new. It ain't all waitin' on you." Basically saying the world has always been like this, you just missed it.

That's interesting. A friend of mine recently said he didn't want kids, because he didn't want to bring them into this world.

I told him the world's always getting worse, and things weren't as good as they were when you remember it or even in the past. Things are always bad.

Finally saw this movie and thanks to this thread it makes a bit more sense. I think I was looking for a thriller/crime type movie, not a thinking type of movie and it threw me off.

Moss's goodness does him in. If he'd not gone back to bring "Agua" to the dying Mexican in the truck, his story would have been very different.

It would have been a really short movie. Chigurh would have found his mobile home with the transmitter and would have killed him and his wife by the end of the first weekend. (or maybe those Mexicans would have found him first)

Or if he was a really good person, he would've left everything as is, and called the police as soon as he could. He got what he got because he was greedy.

Chances are his mobile home wouldn't be as close to a highway as that motel.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's unreal how long it's been. I'm not kidding when I feel like there's been time shift. A New Hope was released in 1977. Would anyone agree with me that 1994 to 1977 was a much "longer" time period than 2024 to 2007? At least it feels that way to me.

In my case, you're comparing 17 years starting when I was a little kid to 17 years starting as I approached middle aged. Of course the 17 years starting as a kid feels longer.

Hell, in 17 years I may be dead. Thread bookmarked.

Relativity. The first 17 years took a larger percentage of all you have known and experienced compared to the next 17 years. Experienced that this week with the 25th anniversary of the bonfire tragedy. The time it took me to get on campus felt like more than the time that has elapsed since it happened, even though the latter is longer than the former.
