I was in a sorority and I consider myself fairly down to earth, intelligent, and non-superficial.
I chose a sorority that had a lot more to offer in terms of personality (not that they were ugly--just not clones) in that we had girls that ran the gamut from athletics to beauty to whatever.
Our house was one of the more "diverse" in that respect as it wasn't all bleach blond barbies.
A few words about rush: Like the sorority girl said, it is the best that you can do in 4 days, but the process is a mutual one in that the rushee eliminates houses at the same time the sororities do.
After the first day, you rank the houses. the houses choose to invite you back (or not). A computer spits out the result to narrow your choices for the next round and so on until you're down to one or two.
For the rush parties, you have a theme for each one. For example, for our first, it's such a big party that it's a meet and greet only with each rushee meeting at least 3 or 4 girls, with strategic rotations. Then the girls compare "notes" so that they know exactly who met each girl and every rushee gets fair time meeting her.
For the first elimination IN OUR SORORITY we would only cut people if they had bad grades.
The second party is smaller, of course, and we would cut people who had "questionable morals", ie, someone knew her from high school or something. Also if someone was a total train wreck or said something like, "I only want to go Zeta," sorry, we're not going to ask you back, hope Zeta likes you.
The next party is much smaller and we do some kind of activity with the girls. One year we did a service project and made stuffed animals for our philanthropy. This showed the girls that we do more than meets the eye, plus it allows for better conversation and people open up more.
Lastly, is preference party where we tell the girls the emotional importance of our sorority, etc. etc. It's normally very lovely and a time for them to decide if this is the sisterhood for them.
While you all think it's rent-a-friend, any decent sorority understands the importance of rush, and if you get the plastic feeling from them, that is not the house for you.
I hope that cleared things up a bit.
I was in this sorority at another school, but I have participated in the A&M's chapter as an alumna so I have seen both sides of the coin on this one.
