Ol Ags and Maggies have about the same number of applicants to acceptances each year. Usually about 20 or so spots for 200+ applicants.

can we start about least hard to get into?

My friend went to remove his application from AOLP (aggie orientation leadership program, they do the new student conferences), and the people there pleaded with him to give it a shot and stick with it. and then for the selection, they were only cutting 1 or 2 people out of 90 or so

AOLP = ghey OLP....

seriously, worse thing ever, they don't even know the traditions on campus... how are you supposed to orientate freshmen if you have no clue yourself?

I did AOLP. Wasn't hard to get in to and had a lot of fun doing it. I didn't always know the answers the parents were looking for, but I had the ones the students were looking for. Was hung over half the time as are half of the people doing it. Looks great on my resume too.

A lot of campus organizations are just reasons to meet people and drink together.

see, but it bothers me when they are giving the wrong answer about traditions... and then not going to silver taps, no really knowing what it is about. sure its okay to drink and have fun... but take it a little more seriously. if you justify and clearly explain the traditions, and freshmen can see that, "ya, alot of people do them here... they are legit" then more people would participate. instead, we have people who are uneducated and uninterested in the past of A&M... thats my beef with both AOLP and fish camp

well the diamond darlins have a TON of people try out for a small number of spots, but that doesn't make it hard to get into because it doesn't require anything of the applicants (like leadership, accountability, management, or other actual demands)

As a former diamond darling, I would have to respectfully disagree with this assessment.

Oh yeah, Maggies have quite the reputation for being big eaters. Not necessarily big girls, just big eaters.

CNN.com actually did a story about the phenomenon a few years ago. The link is no longer live but I still have the story from an email:

Golden Corral Expects "Meaty" Weekend, Maggies of Texas A&M hold Reunion

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) -- For CEO Margo Lieberman, this coming weekend is her equivalent to Christmas shopping for retailers.

"You wouldn't believe the amount of food these girls put down. And the cash registers don't stop ringing!"

Sales for her College Station’s Golden Coral are always brisk, given the presence of Texas A&M student organization MAGGIES. However, when the reunion comes, the girls take consumption to another level.

Lieberman says the first year took her a bit by surprise.

"We had heard chatter about the reunion from the typical Mags we have in and out each day. We tried to plan ahead with a few extra pounds of salbury steaks and gallons of gravy, but we just weren't ready. I kept asking myself 'They have to stop at some point!'," says Lieberman. "This year, however, I think we're prepared."

Prepared would seem to be the understatement of the century, as Lieberman displays the boxes of steaks stacked from floor to ceiling. Neal Radcliff, who operates the forklift responsible for stacking the steaks, has never seen such a display.

"You know, we have some big eaters come in and out of this place- softball tournaments, firefighters, even the Nebraska football team- but honestly, nothing compares to this weekend. I just hope this forklift doesn't give out before the appetite of those girls does!"

When questioned about how Golden Coral became the spot of choice for these calorie-consuming co-eds, Lieberman had no real answer. None of the Maggies would comment for this story; however, they did issue this statement:

“People have really blown our eating habits out of proportion. Sure, we like to eat, but what girl doesn't?"

For Lieberman, she's not questioning it.

“Hey, whatever keeps these girls coming back for more, I'm all for it. I just hope our cooks are up for the challenge this weekend."

So do the Mags, Margo, so do the Mags.

I learned the traditions and taught the stuff I was supposed to and then some. I told of my favorite traditions, etc. However, most of the new students nowadays do not seem that concerned with the traditions. I can only answer questions when asked them and if they happen to be about the Chicken instead of the 12th Man thats not my fault.

It's a different breed of student at A&M these days.

you initiate the questions... duh!

Just because they don't ask you about silver taps and why its important doesn't mean that you can't slip it in.

That's part of the NORMAL stuff we talk about. We cover the traditions. Whether they choose to ask more or not is their perogative. I don't force anything upon anyone. We give them our contact information, are available to answer questions any time they want. The truth of the matter is just many of them are not too interested in the traditions. I answered many questions about traditions, but I answered many more about "college life".

Not to knock your organiszationm(well maybe a little) but seriously, there are very few people on campus that have any idea of where the older traditions came from the majority of people who are charged with teaching them to new ags have absolutley no clue.
ktownag08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Well bash AOLP all you want. I did it last year and that was it.

Oh and you can't teach what doesn't want to be learned. The new students DO NOT CARE about the traditions for the most part. This is just my observation.
