Oh yeah, Maggies have quite the reputation for being big eaters. Not necessarily big girls, just big eaters.
CNN.com actually did a story about the phenomenon a few years ago. The link is no longer live but I still have the story from an email:
Golden Corral Expects "Meaty" Weekend, Maggies of Texas A&M hold Reunion
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) -- For CEO Margo Lieberman, this coming weekend is her equivalent to Christmas shopping for retailers.
"You wouldn't believe the amount of food these girls put down. And the cash registers don't stop ringing!"
Sales for her College Station’s Golden Coral are always brisk, given the presence of Texas A&M student organization MAGGIES. However, when the reunion comes, the girls take consumption to another level.
Lieberman says the first year took her a bit by surprise.
"We had heard chatter about the reunion from the typical Mags we have in and out each day. We tried to plan ahead with a few extra pounds of salbury steaks and gallons of gravy, but we just weren't ready. I kept asking myself 'They have to stop at some point!'," says Lieberman. "This year, however, I think we're prepared."
Prepared would seem to be the understatement of the century, as Lieberman displays the boxes of steaks stacked from floor to ceiling. Neal Radcliff, who operates the forklift responsible for stacking the steaks, has never seen such a display.
"You know, we have some big eaters come in and out of this place- softball tournaments, firefighters, even the Nebraska football team- but honestly, nothing compares to this weekend. I just hope this forklift doesn't give out before the appetite of those girls does!"
When questioned about how Golden Coral became the spot of choice for these calorie-consuming co-eds, Lieberman had no real answer. None of the Maggies would comment for this story; however, they did issue this statement:
“People have really blown our eating habits out of proportion. Sure, we like to eat, but what girl doesn't?"
For Lieberman, she's not questioning it.
“Hey, whatever keeps these girls coming back for more, I'm all for it. I just hope our cooks are up for the challenge this weekend."
So do the Mags, Margo, so do the Mags.
