Is it renting a Penske truck and using the AAA discount or is there a better way?

Ship your clothes and books UPS.
That way you need a smaller truck.

Hide under the wind-screen on top of an 18-wheeler that is heading east on I-10.

Yes. It's the best way and the AAA 10% off was the best price I found. I signed up for AAA online (just for the discount) then booked the truck. Penske equipment is much better (newer) than the competition. Just make sure the trailer ramp is "fully" locked in place before you drive your car on a car carrier (if you rent one of those). I scratched a bumper by not checking the ramp.

When my best friend moved from CS to NYC, she used Penske. Said that Uhaul was grossly overpriced, and Penske was the best price all around.

You do realize that if you can afford a 1 bedroom shack in California, you can get a 4500sq ft house and some land in Houston for the same money right? I say sell what you can and come with the shirt on your back.

I was looking on the ABF UMove option where they move it for you...I got a price that is $600 less than Penske but I have to be around when they deliver the furniture (ie I have no control on when they deliver...its an estimate).

And yes, still riding with the roomie.

Problem with ABF U Move (or anyone else) is you lose control of the process. IMHO there is more than $600 worth of risk there.

Google any moving company and "fraud", "rip off" etc. you will see how limited your recourse is once someone else takes possession of your stuff.

I paid someone else to load the Penske, watched them load, drove the truck myself and paid someone else to unload it and watched them unload it. Again IMHO, much less risk that way. But moving stinks so good luck with whatever you do.

I moved from Texas to Chicago and used the ABF Umove. My mom had heard about it from a friend who used it to move her daughter from Texas to Ohio. She didn't have any problems with it either.

I rented a Penske truck and drove all my stuff from Texas to California several years ago. It was cheap but a lot of work (obviously).

Coming back to Texas last year my company paid for someone else to pack and move everything, and it was infinitely better.

Get a real job and they will pay for it.

Dumbass.

Uhaul trucks have a lower bed, which makes it easier to load. They also have a shock system that drops the rear end an extra 6 inches when loading to make it even easier.

But the uhauls can be hoopties sometimes. Penske trucks look newer, but I've never used one.
