I always thought Lubbock sucked, based on a few visits while I was in college. Some friends of ours moved there about a year ago, and we spent a weekend with them this past summer. I changed my mind. Lubbock is a pretty nice place. Good restaurants, good shopping, easy to navigate. Reasonable housing prices. I liked it alright.

(edit: I would prefer College Station, though, because that is what feels like home.

Smell: Advantage CS as there is none

Lubbock has tumbleweed! Not sure how that fits in here, but I just thought it was cool.

Let me help, having lived in both places.

1.)Weather - depends on which you dislike the most - wind or humidity. I am leaning slightly towards preferring humidity over wind.

2.)Traffic - Lubbock is the easiest city to navigate in the country. The loop is great. Advantage Lubbock.

3.)Outdoors - College Station has trees, water, etc. Lubbock does not. Advantage College Station.

4.)Location - College Station is close to Austin, Houston, and fairly close to Dallas and San Antonio. Lubbock isn't close to any major cities, but is closer to the mountains. Advantage - College Station

5.)Entertainment, restaurants, etc. - Lubbock probably still has more restaurants, but College Station is catching up. I work in commercial real estate, and College Station has surpassed Lubbock and Amarillo as far as retail and restaurants trying small markets. Examples - College Station got Pei Wei and Jos. A. Bank first, and those two came to Lubbock after successful openings in CS, and now they are doing stores in Amarillo. Now comes the key factor - College Station has Texas A&M, Lubbock has Texas Tech. Depends on what school you went to, and given the fact that attending football, basketball, etc. games will probably be your top source of entertainment, then it depends on who your team is. Let's call this category even.

6.)People - people are great in both places, except the Tech student section at football games. Call it even.

What contingencies are used in your decision for "city layout".

Truth be told, this comparison is relatively speaking apples vs. oranges. One town is primarily blue collar and dependant on agriculture and happens to house a relatively large state school. The other town is a pure college town and has been since its innate beginnings. I personally dislike Lubbock and would absolutely hate living there in such a desolate location, but to each their own.

Having lived both places, and grown up near Lubbock, I'm going to have to agree with Know It All. WestTxAg06 - you need help. The only place Lubbock is better than is Odessa.

Traffic: College Station. You can get anywhere without using a major road. Lubbock has no equivalent of Anderson or Brentwood. The clusterf*** of 19th and Brownfield Highway alone makes Lubbock traffic suck. And don't blame it on the construction. It sucked before that too.

Layout of city: advantage Lubbock - I'll agree here, if you think being able to see the north loop from the south loop is a cool thing.

Restaurants: No way Lubbock wins this. CS has Layne's, Wings N More, C&J's, Koppe Bridge, etc. Although the addition of Freebirds has helped Lubbock's case a little.

Crime: It's a well-known fact...if you live in Lubbock long enough, you WILL get stabbed.

Mexican food: Having grown up nearer to Midland, Lubbock's Mexican food has always been a disappointment. But CS didn't have any great Mexican food either - push.

Entertainment: CS has Aggie Sports, and you're an hour away from Houston/Austin. If Lubbock doesn't have what you want, good luck getting to DFW.

Weather: Lubbock wins on the 3 days a year that the wind is under 60 mph.

Trees: nowhere to hide when driving out on country roads in high school. Advantage: CS.

Wind: Ever wonder what it would sound/look like on a space station on Mars? Move to Lubbock. Advantage: CS

Good rule of thumb is this: the closer you are to Mexico, the better the Mexican food.

In my lifetime, and from living in Corpus, Rockport, Victoria, Houston, Austin, College Station, and Bryan and having Mexican food in all of those plus Dallas, Denton, Ft. Worth, Amarillo, and El Paso, I can say that rule of thumb holds up mighty well.

Therefore, when it comes to Mexican food, advantage BCS.

I wouldn't live in either.

Chrisocker - generally I would say that's true too, but I think Amarillo has better Mexican food than Lubbock.

Kingsgate Center in Lubbock is unmatched in College Station. As for the wind, it sucks, but it isn't as bad as some make it seem. May through November the weather is pretty hard to beat. The winter isn't too bad, but I wouldn't mind moving down state during the spring.

Amarillo has better Mexican Food than Lubbock? How so? Give me some places to try next time I am up there!

Tacos Garcia - if you've been to Jorge's in Midland, it's run by the same people.

La Frontera - It's in a rundown neighborhood, in what looks like it used to be someone's house. But it gets packed around lunchtime. Just give yourself a couple hours after lunch to recover.

Leal's - Started in Muleshoe. I think they used to have one in Lubbock, but it closed down.

Other than Abuelo's and Rosa's, what does Lubbock have? Taqueria Jalisco on Q is pretty good. I've never been a fan of Durango's though.

I'll agree that Lubbock doesn't have any shortcuts like C.S. does, and that ensures that it's a set 10-15 minute trip anywhere, but the overall general state of traffic in Lubbock is easier to navigate. I haven't yet experienced any difficulties on Slide, Quaker, or Indiana the likes of which I frequently did on Texas or University. Traffic is always the same in Lubbock, College Station is more variable and subject to disasters.

It all goes back to the layout. I think Lubbock was originally designed to handle more traffic than College Station. B-CS has sort of outgrown itself and is experiencing growing pains while trying to correct those issues on the go (e.g. the expansion of Texas Ave.), while Lubbock made such arrangements 20-30 years ago. If College Station had done the equivalent of Lubbock building Loop 289 when it was on the edge of civilization way back when, C.S. traffic would probably be a breeze.

I think College Station probably has more unique places, but Lubbock has far more restaurants. Lubbock restaurants get busy at night, but they don't get to be the complete cluster-flops like Cheddars and Texas Roadhouse in C.S.

I prefer the wind and lack of trees, but like I said originally, that's a personal preference thing.

College Station is catching up on shopping, but Lubbock still has the edge. You're right about Kingsgate Center, it is completely unmatched. Also, I've always been a bigger fan of the South Plains Mall than Post Oak Mall. I think Lubbock will probably keep the edge in shopping, just because Lubbock is the place that everyone in West Texas goes for "big city" shopping, while College Station has easy access to Houston, Austin, San Antone, and even D-FW.

Obviously A&M is a better school than Tech, but I was comparing the quality of life in the two towns, not the universities.

By the way, Lubbock Country Club is hard to beat for the money. Great golf course, and reasonable dues. Don't know how expensive it is at Pebble Creek, but it is expensive at Traditions. Great golf course at Traditions.

On I-27, north side of town out by the airport. Only course in town with some rolling hills and big trees.

By the way, it is a perfect day in West Texas today. Why am I inside watching football and checking out TexAgs?

Hmm, I didn't even realize it was out there. I've always just assumed Lakeridge was the premier country club, since the nicest houses and development (like Kingsgate) surround it.

And yes, it is a beautiful day in Lubbock. Too bad law school is keeping me inside.

Lubbock is far more worst in crime than Bryan or College Station.

Lakeridge is in a nice area, but there is no comparison between the two country clubs. Lubbock CC is very nice.

my parents just bought a house on 105th.

dayum...when i grew up there, life ended at 82nd...unless you were headed to the Strip.

lubbock traffic is far better than cs. you can find just about any address without looking at a map, since the streets are a grid and numerical and alphabetical.
lubbock restaurants are better as well, mainly because it has a TON of restaurants and orlando's and cagle's are far better than anything i've found in college station.
weather is better in cs. the wind is miserable, especially when it's already cold and dry.

The wind is tough, but it isn't like every day is bad. Some days good, some not so much. The spring time is when it is worst. However, there is no way that the summer weather is better in College Station than Lubbock. Summer and Fall - advantage Lubbock
Winter and Spring - advantage College Station

College Station: Texas A&M
Lubbock: Texas Tech

Argument over, Lubbock loses.

I love Lubbock. Traffic is way better, no humidity is freaking awesome, and the people (get this) are exponentially nicer, unless a large group of Raiders finds out you're an Aggie. All but one Raider I've ever met in my life have been perfectly respectable and kind, and very welcoming. The same cannot be said for the snobs of CS.

That's been my experience as well. I grew up in Red Raider country, I'm friends with a lot of them, and I've never had any trouble with Red Raiders, other than good-natured back-and-forth teasing.

Never had any major problems with Tech people. It has been a bit tough these past 12 YEARS! Can't believe we have lost 9 of 12 to those clowns. Oh well, at least I now have the upper hand when it comes to basketball talk.
