the fact that if it is "truly better, it will still be in business in 3 years" is not really the point. the point is that Ags should support other Ags, especially people like mike and ashley that have helped out so many students.

How much in scholarship money have Mike and Asheley given back to A&M? I don't think I have met the Layne's Chicken Scholarship winner.

How do you compete against a chain like Cane's if you're the owner of Layne's?

Provide a better product with competitive prices in an inviting atmosphere.

In other words, if Layne's food is better than Cane's and comparably priced, I will eat there. However, the place looks like it hasn't seen a mop since it opened. I'd rather eat in a "chain with no personality" and be able to park in a paved spot rather than sit in that godforsaken dump with the f-ed up parking.

And spare me the "but but but....Layne is an Ag and we need to stick together!"

Somehow, Sweet Eugenes and Coffee Station have seen to do okay since Starbucks came to town a few years ago.

I eat regularly at C&J's because it's the best BBQ in town.
I eat regularly at Mi Cocina's because of their good food and great prices.
I eat at the Chicken Oil because of their great burgers and T-Fries.
I eat at Koppe Bridge because of their great chicken fried steaks.

I don't eat at a single one of those places just because they may be owned by an Aggie. I eat at them because of the food, service, atmosphere and prices.

Layne's has good food, bad service, sh***y atmosphere and decent prices. If Cane's can beat that, I'm there.

People being whiny b**ches about some healthy competition to a "beloved Aggie institution" will get me to go to Cane's real quick.

I'd eat BBQ out of a T-sips Ass Crack and wash it down with SatanCola if it was good and reasonably priced.

actually I am a huge fan of supporting local businesses

but it is stupid to support something local if it is crap

I've never been to either one and probably will never go

but there are loads of great little places in town, but I bet you eat at On the Border rather than driving to Zarape's or you will eat at Johnny Carino's before driving to Cafe Capri

doesn't matter if you think Johnny Carinos is better

you have to support the local place, even if you don't like it, because it is owned by an Ag

sure i will support Aggies when possible, but i do have issues with places that are dirty. i will choose clean over dirty any day. thats just common sense.

it would be nice if Laynes would take pride in the appearance in their resturant and give it a very good scrub down.

Let me start by saying this: I am a big fan of the food at Layne’s. I like the chicken fingers, the slightly crunchy fries, the toast, and the sauce…. oh the sauce. It’s one of my favorite places to go for lunch. In all honesty, I’ve probably eaten there (or taken out) about 40 times (just a rough guess) in the last 6 years. Make no mistake, I’m a Layne’s supporter in both word and deed.

That said, I do have to agree with some of the sentiment expressed on this thread. First, the place isn’t the cleanest restaurant in town – far from it. Being dirty should not be confused with being unique – there is nothing unique about dirty tables and floors. What I don’t get is that this is such an easy problem to fix. Be diligent about keeping the place clean and give the building and the grounds a face lift. This will go a long ways.

Second, Layne’s needs to market. I’ve contacted the General Manager a couple of times recently about some things that I am putting together that would present marketing opportunities for the business. I hope he will respond. Be creative and think outside the box. I remember when I was a freshman at A&M, Freebird’s was close to folding when they started the “Save the Bird, Eat a Monster” campaign. Can you imagine that? Freebird’s needing to be “saved”? Well, the campaign worked and they gave their customers a reason to come in the doors, and more importantly, a reason to return.

Third, I hope Layne’s succeeds, I truly do. I don’t know Mike and Ashley, but I do know the chicken fingers and the sauce (oh the sauce) and I would like to be able to eat many a lunch there in the future. However, the success of Layne’s will be dependent on what Layne’s does and not what Aggies do. Listen to the constructive criticisms on this thread (and others) and make the changes necessary to satisfy your current customers and to reach new customers. Be competitive. If you don’t take steps to continually improve the business, you will be overtaken. Please don’t let that happen.

From a saucer..I mean.. supporter,

Brandon ‘95

i love Layne's, but they had a decade to build up the market when no one was around to compete with them - they didnt do a damn thing - there are lots of people who have lived in CS for years who never had any idea Layne's existed

if you want to endear yourself to the community, you should start BEFORE you get desperate - i will try the new place, and if they're better, so be it

This is exactly correct...

Depending on "customer loyalty" in a college town where the population turns over every five years will be the death of Layne's. The incoming class of 2010 isn't going to know that Layne's is owned by Aggies or that has been there longer than the nicer place with the identical menu two doors down.

What Layne's need to do is separate themselves from the competition. Start delivering. Consider a move to a bigger and better location (Layne's on Northgate?). Set up a booth outside the games like other places have done.

Simply complaining about it and doing nothing, IMO, is conceding defeat.

If the owner of Layne's is as shrewd a businessman as this email suggests he'd know that.

I laughed when Cane's was about 1/2 built. All of a sudden, Laynes threw some fresh rock/dirt down in the "parking area" (I use that term loosely) to fill in the holes. It was kind of a "that should take care of that" attempt at sprucing up the place - like they saw competition coming in and said "well, it's time to fix the old place up a little." I kept waiting for the second phase of upgrades, but haven't seen anything, yet.

With that said, I still like Laynes more - I've been to Cane's before and it's just not as good, IMO.

I remember those horrible radio commercials Layne's did back in 94-95. They used like the worst George Bush (SR) impersonator ever. I guess bad advertising is better than no advertising.

We've been thru Ruston on a game day and tried to eat at the Cane's... horrendous lines as they sell "tailgate packs" of strips and fixin's by the truckload. We ate and enjoyed.

Never been to Layne's- must be a new army thing.

i;ve eaten at Laynes a few times, and I've never eaten at Canes, but I find the initial post and poster pathetic

to come on a message board such as this and beg for business and then beg for people to not go to your competition is truly sad.

aside from the dirty table/restaurant comments, it seems as though the owners of Laynes have never put a single dime of their profits back into the business itself to make it better and to make the environment better. just cause a place is a 'hole in the wall' doesn't mean it has to be filthy and have potholes on every foot of its driveway.

i dont go there anymore just cause of the potholes and its not worth navigating a minefield of potholes to eat at that place. the food although good, isn't that good.

one of the major rules of business is that if you dont put a decent portion of your profits back into your business, eventually you'll fail or eventually someone will come along and beat you with a better product.

instead of griping to texags nation about "the big bad corporation" opening up a couple doors down from you, you should be spending equal time and energy in coming up with a plan to better your establishment.

and another thing, if indeed Laynes was first, and you really thought your product was all that good, you should have shown a lil more ambition and #1 improved your current location/appearance, and #2 expanded into other markets and hit it big yourself.

sorry to sound so harsh, but the initial post is really pathetic. if i were the owner, i'd be pretty pis*ed about my wife coming on here and whining/crying to the whole world about this.

i wish you good luck and its always great to see a 'mom & pop' take on the big bad corporate foe and win, but you have a lot of work to do and its in your control.

Raising Canes opened up a few blocks from me in Houston. I was glad to see it open because it was exactly like Laynes and I like me some chicken strips and sauce.

Of course, the big question is, which company ripped off who first? Seriously, the fingers, sauce and sides are the EXACT same, texture, taste, etc.

Anyone know how the sauce is made? Just curious.

I'd go to Layne's if it came down to it. Why? Cane's doesn't have potato salad, instead they have cole slaw. But it is way nicer inside and the lemonade is good, but seasonal.

Mike is a great guy. I worked with him from 95' to 97'.

However, truth be told, Layne actually stole the idea from a restaurant in Athens, GA. The restaurant was named "Guthries".

As others have said, Layne's needs to worry about Layne's...and not who's next door. If they take care of their customers and maintain the restaurant they will still do well. Customers will decide what they like best. I hope Layne's has more of a competitive advantage than just their sauce...we shall see.
