Skran is just upset because I didn't kiss him goodbye the other morning.

That's what you get for buying a used car and not spending a lot of time with it before buying.

It's one thing to buy a new car without seeing it. Hell, I bought my Jeep new without ever seeing it because they had to have the only metallic black sent from another dealership and that's what I wanted, but it was new, so I knew nobody had trashed it.

Pretty stupid on your part buying a used car that way.

I can give numerous accounts of people getting s-crewed by Carmax. Of the people I know, far, far more have had a less-than-satisfactory experience than a satisfactory one.
There is something inherently fraudulant about the car business in the US, and Carmax practices hard to be the leader!

It was the only vehicle in Houston in that price range with the features I wanted. Pretty much same situation as you, except it was used.

You had an opportunity to take it back during the five day grace period, but instead decided to take the chance of a cleaning that may or may not resolve the issue.

Seems to me that you have yourself to blame for this one.

I think if they had just said, "Sure, we'll try to get the odor out. In the mean time, here's a loaner, and if we can't get the odor out, we'll take the car back or let you exchange it" I would be perfectly happy with them.
To be fair, I'm sure "get odor out of car" is pretty low on their shop's priority list; especially considering you sat in the car.

I don't understand how a smell is so bad yet you didn't notice it. If anything, it usually works the other way; you notice the smell first and then adapt to it.

Carmax facilitated same.
I still agree that Carmax sux.

If the car has cloth seats, theres interior carptet/upholstery cleaners that for $5 and a bit of elbow grease you get could rid of the odor in an hour if you work hard.

If I was the CarMax guy i'd tell you to take a hike, you bought the car knowing what it smelled like.

No, aside from the general manager lying about offering an exchange, I don't really see what Carmax did wrong.

Mechanical issues are one thing, as a customer, you can't really catch a lot of that while looking the car over. If there was mechanical problem, obviously Carmax should rectify the problem and give him a loaner.

Smell is another matter. You can detect that while looking the car over. If I was Carmax, I'd be annoyed that some customer was whining about a smoke smell, which if it's so bad, you'd think they'd notice right off the bad.

Said customer now wants to tie up my repair shop and have Carmax pay a couple hundred bucks for a loaner, yeah right.

If they had a comparable vehicle within 100 miles, I definitely would have returned it. I like the vehicle a lot, and the only problem I have with it is the odor. That is worth trying to solve the problem. I am more than willing to let them try to fix it, but they made a specific point that they would not schedule a cleaning until after the grace period expired, even though they admitted they were supposed to do this prior to selling the vehicle, but did not.

Keep in mind that I ultimately don't want to return the vehicle; I just want it to not smell like stale cigarettes.

The corporate people went on and on about how much they take care of their customers and how such and such person had a similar problem and they put that person in a loaner 4 or 5 times while they tried to fix the problem and that they would take care of me if I didn't return the vehicle and just gave them the chance to fix the problem.

The service department is a complete 180 from that. They'll schedule it when they want to, and told me I could take the bus, but won't pay for the bus tickets.

This isn't a vehicle issue, it's a service issue.

Let them ozone it.
Dude, if you looked at 20-30 cars and rushed to buy this one...that's on you...

I'd rather buy a rental car than one that smells like a@@.

MSCAg, Why don't you buy your next car or two from Carmax? I would bet that you'll have issues.
Better yet(if you think they are so up front and honest), go pick out the vehicle you like, tell them that you trust them to give you their best price and trade-in figure, and pretend that you intend to accept their offer. Do you believe that they won't at least TRY and s-crew you? i.e. try to "hit a home run" as they say in the "industry".

I test drove an 03 or 04 F250 from them once....had new miss-matched tires and the interior looked like a dog lived in it previously....outside was pretty clean though.

They just did a halfazz job of cleaning the inside.

I also think it's funny how you HAVE to walk into their dealership to get to the carlot..you can't just go out and browse.

I agree that they should have stood by their claims and treated you more fairly.

Read my posts. I've made no comment about the general nature of Carmax. Perhaps they really are so evil and crappy. I had a friend who used to sell cars for that Ford dealership on I-30 by the mall, I know how much most places try to screw you over.

However, in this Ct's situation, I really don't see how Carmax is at fault.

First off, the fact that there wasn't a better car deal around is irrelvant to this thread. Fact is nobody made you buy the car.

And if the smell was so bad, you should negotiated for them to clean the car during the sale.

As for them waiting to scedule, who knows. Again, most dealers have busy repair shops and I could see how de-odoring a car would be low on that list. Likewise, perhaps you should have returned the car before the time was up.

Personally, I'd stop messing around with them and try the apple trick Mom suggested.

As soon as the grace period was up, they could get the ozone guy in THE SAME DAY if I wanted, and they would even clean the car while I waited.

I am sorry CTZips, in an ideal world Carmax would care enough to keep their customers happy, but in reality they are a huge faceless company. Plus, the problem is mainly your fault for not pushing it prior to purchase.

Remember that homosexuals have a brain chemistry that more resembles the opposite sex. CTZips is physically male, but brain chemistry is more female. This may help others understand the situation.

Didn't skran have BMW change out his blinker lights? Now THAT is customer satisfaction.

You should've taken the car back. Quit crying, and go do something productive. Or, take up smoking. That will get rid of the smoke smell right away.

It STUNK when you decided to buy it and you bought it anyway without having them do something about it. It's not their problem now, so get over it and get the thing de-stinkified on your own. This isn't about bad customer service. This is about an idiot customer. It's a damn used car. They are going to polish the turd a little and sell it - just like every other used car lot. If you want a perfect car, buy a new one. If you don't like how they polished the turd, then polish it more on your own dime. It's not a freaking Lexus dealership.

Why didn't you return it during the 5 day grace period? Seriously? You had all the leverage and didn't use it. Now they have the leverage and they're using it.

FYI, the "I'm never shopping here again and I'm telling all my friends" stuff isn't leverage.

I bet car dealers get more excited when homos walk in the door than they do when females walk in the door.

Talk about hitting the ripoff jackpot.
