I seem to recall reading once upon a time that it has some meaning in Swahili, but I could be wrong. (Actually, hullabaloo is a fairly common term, so maybe it sounded like a Swahili phrase ... )

The interesting thing is, if you Google it, there are 819 matches. Fancy that.

I read somewhere that the caneck was supposed to represent the sound of either gunfire or shells exploding in the distance, or something like that. But I can't remember where I read that.

I remember hearing something like that too, Racer.

Hullabaloo was the sound of loading the cannon and caneck caneck was the sound of locking the shell in place before firing.

Wow canons, didn't know we still used those.

Rumor has it that Hullabaloo caneck caneck is supposed to imitate the sound a cannonball makes as it rolls down the cannon barrel(Hullabaloo) and when the cannon ball hits the end of the cannon and bounces back (Caneck Caneck). I will try to find some official information.

What I recall reading in a book about Aggie lore, is that the "Hullabaloo Canek Canek" phrase was put into the War Hymn in order to get everyone in time when singing the War Hymn.
