How long do you want to ignore this user?
This weekend is my grandfather (class of '43) turns 80. I want to make a slide show presentation on my computer that chronicles his life (from childhood to us grandkids, etc.). I have tons of good photos but I feel like I need to add something else to it.

I am thinking about adding background music but I am having a little trouble coming up with appropriate songs (for example, the only one that has come to mind is "Love can build a Bridge" by the Judds).

Anyway I was wondering if any of you who were a little more creative or msucially savvy could give me some suggestions.

Also, yes, I realize where I am so I fully expect only 1 out of ever 4 replies to be legitimate but heck its better than nothing.

And for you comedians out there: (1) yes, I have already ruled out "Pop that Coochie" and songs along those lines and (2) no, I didn't already have a list of songs that Listeater ate.

How about "Grandpa" by the Judds?

"Grandpa" is the only thing that comes to mind.

"Grandpa" is a little cliche, have you thought about a song that may have been popular during his youth? Or even a progression of songs that change with the times if you are doing the show chronologically

tree hugger:

yes, I have thought about that. I had thought about trying to use a different song for each era. The problem is, I am just not that well-versed as far as songs are concerned.

For example, my grandfather was a cotton farmer, so I could use a song that has to do with farming, etc. when I am show pictures of that. The problem is, I can't think of any songs that would fit. (only one that even comes to mind is "High Cotton" by Alabama I think)

others,

thanks for the suggestion of "Grandpa" I'll look into it.

For his early days, any of the Big Band sounds/ WW2 music would be good (like Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and In the Mood and Thanks for the Memory ). Try this website: http://nfo.net/usa/ww2.html
For other music of the 20th century, see what the hot tunes were: http://nfo.net/usa/365y.htm Even the early Country/Western songs are represented, like Johnny Cash and Roy Rogers and Patsy Cline.

Good luck, and keep it lively....In the Mood would be great with its grand jazzy finale.

nothin' like a slide show to remind you that you're reaching the end of your life.

"18"- Alice Cooper...

Get someone to change the words to "80"...

"I'm eighty and don't know what I want..."

I can see myself still singing this at 80...

Get him some porn videos and a bottle of viagra. I guarantee he would be much happier with that gift than some cheesy slideshow.

Actually the slide show is great.

I also suggest "Daddy's Hands". Remember, he is your Grandpa but he is also a husband, father, possibly brother and uncle. Did he and your Grandmother have a special song? We played that for my parents 50th anny party years ago and they were so impressed we chased down such an old song.

Sounds like he has a thoughtful grandkid, by the way!

The original "My Life's Been Grand" - Merle Haggard

George Strait released it on one of his latest cd's. Both are good.

"Rust" by Lynn Miles (it's available on iTunes)

Every line in your face is a road you've been down
It's a freight train you hopped
It's a night in a strange town
It's a joke that you told, it's a tear that rolled on
A sad story you heard, or a lover who's gone

It's the scars on your hands
The hard work that you've done
It's the skin that you touched
All the wars that you've won
It's the baby you cradled, it's the letters you wrote
It's the time you held on, it's the time you let go

And the footprints you leave
Are perfect and deep
And your soul is a place
That is tough but it's sweet
And the shadow you cast
Is straight and it's true
But the lines and the scars
Are what I love about you

The rust in your voice that's the dust and the rain
It's the choices defended again and again and again
It's the life that you've led
It's the friends come and gone
It's the highways and truck stops
And the cold grey dawns

And the footprints you leave
Are perfect and deep
And your soul is a place
That is tough but it's sweet
And the shadow you cast
Is straight and it's true
But the lines and the scars
Are what I love about you

Forget about the song.

Just get him a 25 year old hooker.

thanks to all of you who gave me the serious suggestions (and thanks for the laughs for those of you who provided those as well).

aggiemom - good idea about trying to find whether or not there is a special song between him and my grandmother.

I already thought of "Daddy's Hands" (it really fits him well too). And I have "Seein' My Father in Me" by Paul Overstreet as well for picture of his son (my uncle) and the grandsons.

It is coming together quite nicely thanks to the help.
