If you've never had one, well you need to try it. First I ever had was at Bennigan's back in the 80-'s, and I was hooked. Bobby V's in Arlington had a good one too.

Seriously, pretty much your entire daily caloric intake in one sandwich. Smoked ham, smoked turkey, two cheeses, battered and fried until golden, with raspberry preserves and dusted with powdered sugar. It's as if God said "let's give them a brief taste of heaven".



Sure, it's a 1500 calorie sandwich, but YOLO.

Cheddar's appears to be the only place nowadays serving up this bad boy, Let me know if there are others. I now only have one a year. But I feel that annual visit coming on.

Bennigan's was unmatched...that and their club were my gotos in the 80s/early 90s. It was greasy as hell obviously, but didn't make me feel sick instantly like when I try them today. Or maybe I am just old now.

Texas Roadhouse has a test franchise called "Bubba's 43" (or maybe 42) that has a pretty decent Monte Cristo, the best I have had since Bennigans. There is a location just west of 121 and 423 in The Colony.

I put a few of them away at the CS Bennigan's. Start thinking, oh this'll be enough for two meals, and then it's gone!

Don't think I've been to or seen a Bennigan's since then.


I looked up Tree Hugger's suggestion, it's "Bubba's 33."

Its for the best - nothing is more frightening than the end result of a microwaved Monte Cristo. Were no other options in the dorm.

To recreate the full Bennigan's experience, I'd like to find a place where I can ask for non-smoking and be seated right next to the smoking section, separated by a shiny brass rail.

Didn't realize Bubbas was TX Roadhouse owned. The one in Amarillo is right next door to it. It's 10 years old now and there's no sign of slowing. From the outside looking in the test seems to have been successful.

For Houston people, I did some searching and it looks like House of Pies has a version that might be the closest to Bennigan's. At least in terms of being fried and powdered. Not sure if they have the raspberry side dip.

When we were kids our dad would always take us to Bennigan's when we were in College Station to get chicken fried steaks. They were legit.

I grew up eating them at Chandler's Landing yacht club on Ray Hubbard in the 80s. They were even better than Bennigans

For a good while I think the only Bennigans left was in Monahans. According to their website they are making a comeback? Locations in Monahans and Borger, TX of all places, plus several locations in California, Iowa, and a few other states.

Monte Cristo is present and accounted for on the menu.

I've eaten at both Texas locations in the past few years. I had the Monte Cristo in Monahans and regretted the grease ball in my stomach immediately. It was delicious though.

Their steak section of the menu is branded Steak and Alr

There was one on Westheimer in Houston is a strip center probably 15 years ago for a short while.

I waited tables at the CS Bennigan's back in the early 90s. I would get the Monte Cristo just about every shift and never gained a pound…it was great being early 20s…

It doesn't hold a candle. The Bennigan's Monte Cristo was legendary.

And remember the no smoking section on airplanes? The front 15 rows were no smoking and the next 10 rows in the same aluminum tube were smoking,
