When do you fill up your vehicle and does it matter?

I fall into the camp of emptying the tank before I refuel, wherever and whenever that may be. But I hear about people that fill up the same day each week or some that won't let their gauge get below 1/2 a tank.

Does any of this matter? Do you get better gas mileage? Is it better for the engine?

When do you fill up?

I tried to fill mine up but couldn't reach the bottom. Wiggled around the rim a bit.

Oh wait. Wrong thread.

The Auto Board says it's not good to go below 1/4 tank too often because the fuel pump is in the fuel tank and the fuel helps keep it cool. Going too low too often can cause it to fail sooner.

I don't like to go below a quarter tank. Feel like there's a good chance I could run out in a traffic jam on 610 at any point below that.

Very seldom do I go less than a 1/4 tank, and fill up in my home area. I don't like having to stop in sketchy areas to get gas.

I fill up on weekends, even though I'm usually a little under a half tank. If I try to go two weeks, I end up having to fill up on a workday after work when it's 178 degrees out.

Never below 1/2 IOT get home should something happen.
When the truth comes out, do not ask me how I knew.
Ask yourself why you did not.

My commuter car I know very well exactly how far it can go and all the gas stations on my routes to work. I'll take it to resting on empty, mostly because I like to calculate real mileage on each tank and I think I get better numbers on near complete tanks. The "9" gallon tank in this little Honda will hold over 10 gallons of gas.

On a road trip I change completely and fill up between 1/2 and 1/4 unless it is a trip I have made many times and know the stops needed for that particular vehicle.

I usually run it down to 1/8 tank or low fuel light if I'm cruising around town. I've done this for 23 years and never had a fuel pump issue. Sometimes I'll stop sooner if I'm killing time puttering around on the weekend.

If I'm on a roadtrip I start looking for somewhere around 1/4 tank. And I top it off before I leave.

If I'm very remote (Big Bend) I keep it at least half full.

As far as performance or mileage, low tabk level is less weight and should get better mileage, but maybe not noticeable. Gas is around 6lb/gal I think, so 23 gallon tank is 138lb so about one passenger. Not a huge deal.

To me it's more about efficient use of my time. If you refill at 1/4 tank instead of near empty you're refilling 33% more often.

I always choose Bucees if I can.

I generally end up in neutral and hoping momentum will carry me far enough to the pump. It drives my wife who never lets it get below 1/4 tank insane.

When I have about 22 miles left?

I never fill it up before the light comes on (around 50-55 miles) unless I am going out of town.

Maybe I'll fill up today as I know I'm getting low and going out of town tomorrow.

Don't go less than 1/4 tank. Don't fill up while the station's tanks are being refilled. They can stir up sediment that clog your filter more quickly.

As someone above said, never on a Friday so we can stick it to the man.

But yeah, the light in my truck comes on at 50 miles remaining and since my commute to work is 8 miles each way I just use that as a gauge to determine when I fill up.

BTW - while the fuel pump for most cars is in the fuel tank, I do not believe it remaining submerged has been an issue for about a decade. So you very likely are not doing any damage by going to empty,

Usually around 25 miles to E. I try to only put Top Tier gasoline in my truck. If the tanker truck is unloading, I keep going.

My gas light usually goes off at around 40 miles left. It irritates me, so that's usually when I fill-up. Gas went up 18 cents per gallon yesterday, and I dropped under 100 miles today.

I usually fill up when it gets below 1/2 tank. On trips, I'll top off at each stop. Very rarely do I get below 1/4 tank.

On the 7th and 11th of every month to get the 50 cent off discount. Adds up when you can fill up 40 gallons on 2 different vehicles.

Also, price lock is a wonderful thing. Today's increase in gas prices since yesterday is a perfect example of it working to perfection when done correctly.
