Gym sauna etiquette has gone straight to hell

Been 25 years since I had a gym membership with a sauna.

Attire back then was a towel only. A swimsuit was acceptable but frowned upon.

Went to the sauna at LA Fitness this week and holy hell. On Tuesday one guy was properly attired in a towel. The other was fully clothed in workout clothes, socks, shoes, iphone. What an idiot. Almost felt bad that he didnt know the proper attire for saunaing.

Went again this morning. 8 guys. Every single one fully clothed in sweaty post workout clothes. Only one without shoes. Most with phones. 2 with phone audio on.

Trump should just fire all the nukes straight up in the air.

I hear bathhouses are being brought back in minnesota (lower case on purpose). Maybe OP needs to consider moving there.

I always did swim trunks but yeah, you're supposed to be clean (rinsed off) and barefoot in the sauna. Not all dripping sweat that's been run been rubbed all over machines and weights and tracking in all the crap on the bottom of your shoes in there.

And your device should be left out. Not the place for it. Hopefully the heat and humidity kills it. A good sauna should be at about 175F and quite humid.

As someone who grew up going to gyms and country clubs I don't understand people today that are fully clothed with shoes and a phone in the sauna. There is etiquette! Towel or swim trunks but no clothes and no phones! I don't want to sit next to some smelly guy in his mildew workout gear as he watches brain rot on his phone. It's also certain demographics that do this and they don't look Northern European.

I would like to think that the fully clothed folks are trying to pre-sweat before a workout in their minds, similar toa warmup I guess.

When I used to work out regularly before work, I would sit in the sauna or steam room for ~10 minutes after a workout to decompress, but that was towel only, straight to the shower, then new towel and get ready to go to work. I never did the whole full nude thing in the steam or sauna just to respect the fact that someone would be sitting where my ass was and also the caution factor that someone might have been bareassed before I got there.

As someone who grew up working my ass off on the farm in 90+ degree heat and syrupy humidity, I've never understood people who want to sit in a sauna, ever. Go haul some square bales, work cows, clear some brush, or run a chainsaw all day and then see how you feel. The thought of sitting in a small confined hot box with a bunch of naked dudes has zero appeal to me.
