Sorry to hear that. If it's any consolation, I hit that wall years ago. Goodbye running, hello elliptical and peloton world. That said, I used to listen to this podcast by a few orthopedic surgeons - they had 2 pieces of advice for men over 40: don't run and don't go up on tall ladders. Lots and lots of clientele from those 2. So you aren't alone.

My dad retired last year. He is constantly tinkering in his shop, welding or building something. He recently finished building a '57 Chevy drag racer. And also built an entirely new shop for storing boats, trailers, welders, tools, etc. he's always been that way, always has to be doing something productive from sun up until sundown, often still working in his shop after sundown.

- Living away from people (an interest) started in my mid-40s
- Sawmill has always fascinated me. Took the plunge and am not sorry.
- Have had dachshunds since 1989.
- I am a "Jeep Guy". Have owned 6 in the past with a 2026 Gladiator, a 2013 Wrangler, and the 1951 model.

I also have a shooting range with a Texas Star, Dueling Tree, and several steel targets.
When the truth comes out, do not ask me how I knew.
Ask yourself why you did not.

Sorry. I'm still a few years away, but between my wife and 2 daughters in college, I'm trying to get females off the payroll vs adding more to it

I don't understand how someone who is "loaded" can be bored in retirement. I can't even engage in this conversation because I'm so confused by the premise. Maybe it's a trick question. I can think of tons of stuff I enjoy to do, especially if money isn't a concern.

It depends upon what he's on.

Start a second career being a pimp. They say pimpin ain't easy. But, if you are loaded like you say you are, then you won't have to care about the money and you can just care about the girls. You may have to slap a ho every now and then, but it will be outa love, not greed.

A pimp's love is different from that of a square

Nurses have THE raunchiest senses of humor. Get a few drinks in a gaggle of them, and you got a hell of a party.

My mother worked in healthcare, used to call nurses NSMs (notorious sexual maniacs). She always told me to never date a nurse, a woman who had tattoos, or a woman who wore ankle bracelets (apparently ankle bracelets were a sign you were 'easy' back in the day).

So of course I dated a nurse with tats right out of college. She was a ton of fun. 10/10, would do it again.

It's a good plan, but waiting until one's late 60s to do it leaves a pretty small window to enjoy the fun while you have good mobility and health. The 70s are brutal on folks. Now sometimes that is simply financial necessity and it is what it is. But I never understand it when someone doesn't retire just because they basically just need something to kill time.

for some people (mostly boomers who grew up in an agrarian lifestyle), work is all they've ever known how to do.

Glad you said this. I didn't know how without coming across as some kimd of bragging.

I've worked since I was 10 years old. Am 63, own 3 retail businesses and have a herd of bison. I am at the stores 6 days a week.

It's all I know and have known my entire life.

I seriously do not remember taking a family vacation growing up. At all. Closest was when we lived in Hawaii and we did stuff on weekends and showed friends and relatives the island when they visited.

Dad lost that job and we quickly moved to Texas where parents bought a business. I was going into third grade. That's when they worked 7 days a week and my older sisters and I just don't remember ever getting away as my parents kept the business afloat.

So I don't know anything else. Both parents died at this business. And I worry about the same. At my age, I have friends getting sick. Some dying. I worry about that.

It's a mental block. Being able to let go and retire.

It's more difficult than some think.

Average American male dies at 76.5 years old.

If you knew today that you only have 13.5 years left to live, what do you want to do with the rest of your life? What experiences do you want to have? Make a list. No one says you have to retire, but I'd start working on that list.

I'm 46 and have plenty of hobbies/interests to keep me busy for a lifetime if I retired today. I'll never understand people whose whole identity is wrapped up in their career and don't know what to do in retirement.

I largely feel the same way, but I also understand people wanting to feel like they are doing some productive for society, even late in life. And be compensated for their time even of not at their peak career earning.

I'm not loaded but am at a point I could probably stop working and be just fine. I'm fed up with my job, but it may end soon regardless of how I feel. I'd like to fine something that is just clock in fo forty hours and pays my bills until I really am ready to retire.

Those saying you'd have no problem with stuff to do....

I used to say the same thing. But when you take that test drive and have everything for the day knocked out by 9 AM, it's sobering. I had SO much more time than I thought I was going to have.

I have plenty of charities I can help with and am motivated to help - it just is going to more of an adjustment than I imagined.,

What are you top 10 meals you've eaten in a restaurant?

Can you make them all from scratch?

Learning to cook everything you've ever wanted to know how to make from scratch is always fun.

You said you cooked every day, but did you make fresh pasta? Did you make pizza? Do you know how to make focaccia and ciabatta?

You run on logs while playing a trumpet and carrying a free lance?

Have you ever cooked your way through a whole cookbook, making every recipe in it?

Do it. Blog about it. Or post about the experience daily on the Food and Spirits board

I was going stir crazy by Thursday/Friday. I can only read so much and watch so much TV.

Good news was the house was sparkling, the yard perfect and my wife enjoyed home cooked meals for lunch and dinner every day. She liked that - ALOT.

But man - I have got to find more to do outside the house to make this work. Less than a year to go before i pull this trigger. I know I could do more at church related stuff. Also thought about volunteering at local animal shelters to play with the dogs.

Have you considered sleeping with your neighbors wife?

I can solve all your retirement excess spare time problems with just three words.

"Get a boat"

You will never have "nothing to fix" for the rest of your life after that.
