Jack Soo was a legend. My father and I were big Barney Miller fans, too.

Barney Miller may be the most underrated sitcom of all time. They were all so good as well as the writing. Don't make TV shows like that anymore (unfortunately).

Fish was the best character on Barney Miller

Dietrich was my favorite. I love a dryyyyyy sense of humor.

Agreed.

Spin-off worthy!

I've never seen a single episode of this. When it used to come on after the news in the early 80's, the theme song meant it was time for bed. Is it worth a watch in 2026?

Yes.

Barney Miller also had a great jazz lick for intro music.

Gun to my head, probably still my favorite TV show of all time. Saw every episode.

It's almost two different shows. Only two the 6 original stars lasted for the show's entire run--and Loreta Swit's Major Houlihan became a more complex and sympathetic character in the later years. The first 3-4 seasons are more lighthearted, with the antics of the drunken surgeons and their interactions with the sanctimonious (and adulterous) Burns and Houlihan and Jamie Farr's cross-dressing played for laughs. The no-consequences womanizing of the first few years can feel dated.

The latter half of the show went much more in the direction of comedy-drama; some found it preachy. Those are the episodes I prefer--I don't remember the first seasons in the original run so the later years were my introduction to the show.

Colonel Potter's speech at the end of "Old Soldiers" is easily one of the top 10 scenes ever put on TV, for my money.

Dang, now I have to go rewatch that episode.

I watched a lot of MASH over the years, but haven't watched any in a long time. I have kind of forgotten most of it, but it was a really good show for its time.

The movie, which predated the TV show, was worthy.

The book is too. Hawkeye Pierce is based on the author of the book, Dr. H. Richard Hornberger, who was a MASH surgeon in Korea.

Speaking of old TV shows with great intro music, I found out this is available on Roku channel.

This tends to happen with new sitcoms. Too many characters to keep plot lines. So they tend to focus in a fewer characters. The tv show should have been called Hawkee since the show evolved center around him

The actress who played Lt. Dish was nude in Playboy Sept 1972. I think that's why she never came back.

Spearchucker was "brought in" as a ringer for the camp football team in the movie. He stayed on the show until the producers learned there had been no Black surgeons in Korea.

There were a lot of things not exactly accurate about MASH, so I have a hard time believing that was why the character Spearchucker was cut.

He was an anesthesiologists.

Nit picking, I know.

Sorry - brain fart.

Also was surprised to see that, in the book, Trapper John as the chief surgeon and the real expert surgeon. Hawkeye was good, but not the best. Trapper John was also a college football star, hence the reason he's always out playing catch with guys in camp.
