I've never seen a single episode of this. When it used to come on after the news in the early 80's, the theme song meant it was time for bed. Is it worth a watch in 2026?
Gun to my head, probably still my favorite TV show of all time. Saw every episode.
It's almost two different shows. Only two the 6 original stars lasted for the show's entire run--and Loreta Swit's Major Houlihan became a more complex and sympathetic character in the later years. The first 3-4 seasons are more lighthearted, with the antics of the drunken surgeons and their interactions with the sanctimonious (and adulterous) Burns and Houlihan and Jamie Farr's cross-dressing played for laughs. The no-consequences womanizing of the first few years can feel dated.
The latter half of the show went much more in the direction of comedy-drama; some found it preachy. Those are the episodes I prefer--I don't remember the first seasons in the original run so the later years were my introduction to the show.
Colonel Potter's speech at the end of "Old Soldiers" is easily one of the top 10 scenes ever put on TV, for my money.
