Sadly Pope Francis passed away yesterday. May he rest in peace. He did a lot of good. I'm sure many are glad they got to see him at mass yesterday.

Thoughts and prayers for the Catholics and world today.

Rest in Peace. I became Catholic during his papacy. Happy he was able to make it to one more Easter.

He'll probably bend his beliefs to fit the current narrative

Time to re-read Angels & Demons. Definitely in the running for worst adaptation from book-to-screen.

Attended the RCC for years. Always loved the tradition and history. Sad that Francis has passed but there is always something cool about the rituals associated with picking a new pope.

Since this is the GB and not the Religion board I'll say I hope the next pope isn't a DEI hire.

Now that I've made a tasteless comment, I'm not remotely religious, but I really admired this Pope. He was a living embodiment of selflessness.

Betting on the New Pope? Here's How to Place a Wager on the Bishop of Rome
https://www.newsweek.com/betting-new-pope-explainer-vatican-city-catholic-church-2035590
Quote:

According to Online Betting Guide, Cardinal Pietro Parolin is currently the frontrunner at 4/1, followed by Cardinals Luis Antonio Tagle at 9/2, Peter Turkson at 6/1, and Peter Erdo at 7/1. Betting markets also allow wagers on the name the next pope will choose, with "Francis" currently leading at 6/4 odds.

OddsChecker's odds differ, and reports that Tagle, a Filipino cardinal aligned with Francis' vision of inclusivity, is favorite at 3/1. Parolin follows at 4/1, given his extensive diplomatic experience within the Vatican. Other notable contenders include Ghana's Turkson at 5/1 and Hungary's Erd at 6/1, reflecting a mix of progressive and conservative candidates in the running.

Did the guy before Francis die? The one who looked like the guy emperor from Star Wars. He stepped down, but don't remember him actually dying.

Pietro Parolin just might put an end to that.

I'm trying to imagine having money riding on the outcome of this. You can bet on *anything*.

He apparently died in 2022. He was a creepy looking dude. First pope in 600 years to resign. That's crazy. He was actually pope for 8 years. Longer than I remembered.

His message on a personal level was spot on. His interjecting socialist/marxist politics to world leaders unfortunately overshadowed that side of him

More importantly, will we ever get an answer to the age-old question, does a bear No. 2 in The Vatican?

Great name, also an interesting person. He is the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem who condemned Hamas, offered himself as a hostage to Hamas in exchange for women and children, but later wore a palestinian keffiyah in Bethlehem at Christmas time.
