But what about muh "It Takes All Of Us" and muh vague non-action oriented "End (muh) Racismz".

I knew I was missing "something" about the halftime show. I've since read about all the inside jokes and hidden call-outs and disses that anyone not following a personal beef between Drake and Kendrick would miss. It was a performance that meant a lot to a small part of the total audience. So much for diversity. And Equity. And espcially Inclusion.

The truth about music is that it is one of the most openly and accepted forms of segregation to exist. Three of the biggest tours of 2024 were Taylor Swift, Metallica, and Bad Bunny. The number of people who willingly attended all three concerts is small enough to be statistically zero.

This isn't even close. Go look at a list of past performers. Dr Dre and Snoop are the only rappers to headline.

Shakira and JLo - Pop
The Weeknd - Pop
Bunch of rappers
Rihanna - Hip Hop / R&B
Usher - Hip Hop / R&B
Kendrick Lamar

So 2 in 6 years
They are probably complaining because there hasn't been any Country music in a while, considering in 59 years of the super bowl only two times have they had country artists (2003 - Shania, and 1994 - Clint Black, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt, and the Judds). Also do in part because the NFL picks performers that a majority of the fan base somewhat like and country isn't generally the preferred genre of the majority of NFL fans.

The first 24 years (1967-1990) they mostly had college marching bands, drill teams, some jazz musicians, and Up With People whatever the heck that was.

The big headliners look to have started in 1991 with New Kids on the Block.

Since then (by my count) we've had 16 pop artists, 9 rock, 4 r&b, 2 country, 2 rap, 1 blues, and 1 so mixed I couldn't categorize it (2004). Some of those blur lines or cross over at times (pop rock, pop and r&b). Headliners by ethnicity by year were 17 white, 11 black, 5 mixed (individuals or groups), and 2 hispanic.

So it's been pretty diverse and generally genres with broader appeal. But it has also gone in streaks. From 2001 to 2019 14 of the 19 performers were white and all 9 of the rock performers appeared in that span. The last 5 years have all featured black performers and included the only 2 times rap has appeared.

Next year is in Santa Clara / Bay Area.

I bet Metallica gets it, if they want it. They are the biggest musical group in the history of California and from the Bay area.

So was PT Barnum... and after that ****show...I'm beginning to believe he was correct.

I, too, found it incredible. Incredibly forgetful.
It was Kendrick's style. More of a artistic performance than a spectacle. I loved it. The focus was on Kendrick and the culture moreso than fireworks and bombastic sets.

I understand why some wouldn't like it. You probably had to come into it with a bit of knowledge of Kendrick. It was a deliberate choice that he didn't play just his popular songs. And when he did, he wasn't doing the hooks. He was rapping. That was just ~12 minutes of hip hop. He was there for the culture.

I was never really that big on the Super Bowl halftime show, but I got to attend the 1994 Super Bowl in the Georgia Dome. Every seat in the stadium got a souvenir seat cushion that had a pouch attached. The pouch had some trinkets including a walkman style radio with earphones for listening to the game (radio had an American Express logo on it) and a yellow flashlight with a Lays Potato Chip logo on it. At halftime we were instructed to use the flashlight and sway it back and forth while Winona sang "Love Can Build a Bridge". What actually happened was that as soon as the house lights went down everyone turned their lights on and just sat motionless, so that the crowd background image was just a bunch of flashlights. Really lame.

Even more lame was that I set my VCR to record it. When I watched it the next day, I could tell Winona was lip-syncing.

After that, I have not given a flip about the Super Bowl halftime show . As far as that goes, I can say I have been to a Super Bowl, but have little interest in going again. Unless you are into celebrity-watching, it is just another football game and totally overrated.

I would have never known he had "popular songs". ......my wife who listens to everything didn't even know who he was. I damn sure had never heard of him before last night. It's one thing to be a rapper and rap, but the show as a whole wasn't even entertaining. I couldn't understand anything and it all sounded the same. We both thought it sucked.

My 86 year old grandfather-in-law, who doesn't send a lot of WhatsApp messages usually, sent this on the family WhatsApp after halftime:

"Why put such crap on. This is outrageous, egregious, preposterous "

50 year old white guy and former butt rocker isn't really the Superbowl's target demographic. Zero chance Metallica performs at the Super Bowl.

I don't really even know Kendrick Lamar's music, but now I hate it just for him and this half time show's message. It's basically racism. What kind of response would an intentionally all white person performance get?

Stop watching the stupid game with ungrateful little steroid built boys and you won't have to worry about halftime shows. Money killed football just as money normally is root of all evils.

I can still enjoy football without the halftime show ruining the experience for me. 2 separate things.

And, it's the "love of money" that's the root of all evils.
