I drink so much less than I used to. Hard liquor? About once every six months I have one drink.

Wine? Almost never.

Beer? Maybe every other weekend - perhaps even less. Although I will go to a brewery and drink a bit too much perhaps every two or three months.

I won't post pics again, but I have lost lots of weight over the last several years. I made an assessment of everything that passed my lips and alcohol didn't add very much for me in that assessment.

I think alcohol is becoming like smoking - we used to pick up smoking just because it was what we did socially. Alcohol is often the same thing. It used to be weird to abstain from smoking but now it's normal.
except smoking is disgusting and smells lol.

Beer is good. Mixed drinks are good.

If I was overweight I'd cut out alcohol too (I have before to lose a few pounds) but I'm 5-11 and weigh about 165 at the moment. Middle aged man.

Like everything else; All in moderation, even the things that are good for you.

Dude you go a little overboard drinking sometimes. Having two midgets pregnant at the same time and having three paternity tests in the past 7 months is excessive. You've run over your mail box three times last year. Sexually you seem to be going through the alphabet with partners. Asexuals are very hard to nail but you should tamp it down. The neighbors shouldn't be able to have police sketch artist know what tattoos are on your glutes. I'm just saying tone it down. Oh and when a cop asks you if you mind voluntarily blowing that doesn't mean getting down on your knees.

Might I suggest having an "exotic" beverage. I like shaved ice with fresh lime juice and Topo Chico served in a frozen mug or this brown glass bottled ginger beer from Australia (Speck's carries it). It beats having a Diet Coke.

Cancer is so multifactorial I think it is hyperbole to blame it all on alcohol. Humans have consumed alcohol almost since were became homo sapiens. Overdosing of alcohol is clearly dangerous but reasonable consumption is not likely to be terribly detrimental to long term health outcomes. Of course there are some people who cannot self regulate intake and need to avoid it just like opioids and other addictions.

Curious how they know the alcohol caused the cancer. And 100k out of 330 million? Doesn't seem like a giant percentage.

My grandma drank a hot toddy every evening of her life. Lived to 100. I know it's anecdotal , but with those percentages, so are the doctors stats.

In the last few years I've gotten to where I have maybe 2 drinks in an evening once every couple of months. I really enjoy a glass of wine or good champagne and I'm somewhat envious of people who can enjoy those frequently. But even one glass will leave me not feeling optimal the next morning. Not super hungover, just not amazing. When I started wearing an Oura ring and compared my sleep quality after even one drink, it just confirmed what an impact alcohol has on me physically. I'll still indulge on occasion, but I can't ever imagine going back to drinking regularly as I did in my 20s and 30s.

I'd like to hear about your Oura ring experience. I use an older model FitBit now and even that is annoying because I generally don't like anything on my wrists or fingers. But, I was thinking I'd use the Oura ring instead o my wedding ring and just wear it 24/7.

I've had mine for almost two years now and I really love it. At first I wore it with another fitness tracker/hrm during workouts to compare the stats and they came out almost exactly the same, so I feel that it's accurate as a fitness tracker. I like that I can connect it to apple health, which syncs with my Peloton and with AllTrails so that workout data is imported. When I lift weights, I can switch it on to manually record heart rate data, but if I forget, I can easily add the workout type and times after the fact (usually the app picks up that I was working out and suggests adding strength training for x number of minutes to my log).

I actually primarily bought it for cycle tracking because I've always had a super unpredictable cycle and I simply am not going to take my temp every morning - the ring does it for me and after I'd worn it for a few months, it started accurately predicting my cycles which has been life changing for me. I also like all the insights into my sleep patterns, it's helped me narrow down my ideal bedtime, and when I follow the app's suggestions about rest, recovery, and training capacity, I find that I do feel and perform my best.

The only real downside is that the ring is bulky, as far as rings go. It took a while to just not notice it anymore, especially at night. But it's definitely preferable to something on the wrist, to me. I recommend ordering their sizing kit and wearing the sizer you think you want for a few days just to be sure it's comfortable.

I don't get the Oura ring. It looks like it does much less than a decent Garmin watch but costs a lot more.

A couple of drinks per day isn't hurting anybody.

Caveat: better to drink earlier in the evening so it's out of your system & you can sleep better. Going to sleep drunk/buzzed wrecks your sleep. Bad sleep has been tied to neurological disorders like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's etc

Just personal preference. The Oura does everything I need it to. Fitness watches aren't for me; I couldn't sleep with something in my wrist, and I have a collection of nice watches that I prefer to wear over something sporty.

One week in. My wife says she likes how easy it is to stay on track with reasonable food and exercise since we haven't been drinking.

I can't say I have really noticed any differences. Normally we'd have have 1-2 drinks each across 2-3 nights or daytime Saturday, so I'm guessing we've skipped about 5 drinks this week total.

This will also save us some cash now that I think about it. We're not really replacing it with anything except water.

Do you have this data but for masturbation instead of drinks. Combined? If you can post the data source I can do the analysis. After I sober up and rub one out of course.

Alcoholics cannot moderate themselves, thus abstaining from drinking is key.

I envy people who can drink in moderation.

We will all die. Some sooner than later. Some will die randomly, even if healthy. Some will die because they have poor health and some will die later with poor health.

Evaluate your relationship with booze my friends. Our bodies are in constant decay. So all this to say is that you should replace your alcoholism with a weed addiction

Doesn't your liver still bear the burden of filtering out the weed? So, isn't it a problem too?

yes, there are plenty of studies linking marijuana to cancer. Pretty much anything can be linked to cancer because its pretty impossible to isolate individual factors. Same thing with red meat being linked to cancer where they code eating processed food as red meat.

I think with both booze and marijuana, the primary problems are not cancer.

To be clear weed addiction is 100% a real thing. Still hear from some that weed isn't that bad etc. it can definitely hold you down in life and take you to a bad place of dependency. This constant need to check out from reality because reality is boring. Can't even imagine how many social interactions I've missed in the last 10 years because I was too high.
