Might I suggest having an "exotic" beverage. I like shaved ice with fresh lime juice and Topo Chico served in a frozen mug or this brown glass bottled ginger beer from Australia (Speck's carries it). It beats having a Diet Coke.

Anybody here tried Kava drinks in place of alcohol? I've enjoy the URelax from Calming Co.

I know that there is some things out there about Kava being really bad on the liver, but from what I've researched that's not really the case if you're using Noble Kava. I certainly feel 1000x times better the next day after using Kava as opposed to alcohol.

can't remember who it was (comedian iirc) who said something to the effect of 'they say smoking all these cigarettes and drink all this booze is going to take years off my life.. but it's taking the years off the end, so who cares!

I think there are different variations.

When I served alongside the Fijian Army, I had many nights of ceremonial kava with them. Not for the faint of heart.

They get a giant bowl made of rock. Fill it with a bunch of water and bags of kava root powder. They mix it back and forth with their hands and a white tshirt. They sing songs and played guitar. Someone dips a bowl on the mixture and then present it to you.

After a few rounds your tongue starts becoming numb and you start feeling extremely relaxed.

I envy people who can drink in moderation.

A friend of mine who is an alcoholic told me that all alcoholics long to be a social drinker.

He asked me about my Saturday night. I told him my wife and I went to dinner, went shopping, came home and went to bed. He asked what I drank and I said "a beer with dinner".

He said he'd give anything to be able to have just one beer with dinner, because if it were him, one beer would quickly become 12.

Absolutely.

It's a progressive disease. I'm 80 days sober today. Cravings are minimal fleeting to none. I just find myself so much happier and present for my family again.

I feel like there has to be something said for just not having that many beers available to you in your house, and also having a partner who can make sure you don't order that second or third at dinner.

I could see how that would be a challenge for someone with addiction. We bought some drinks for Christmas and New Year's and they're all in the fridge exactly the same as they were two weeks ago. It kinda feels like I'm getting free beer each time we go to the store, don't buy anything, and still have about a 12-pack in there.

Your friend is not in a position to speak for ALL alcoholics. I'm an alcoholic and if I don't drink and don't die in the next 44 days, I'll celebrate 34 years sober. Through the application of the steps and principles of AA I reached a point years ago where I not only don't need a drink, but I also don't want to drink.

My wife had a malignant tumor removed from her left kidney (and some of her kidney) about 15 months ago. Dr. told her she could have a drink very infrequently, like when celebrating a wedding or such. But she has not had a drop of alcohol since being diagnosed.

And to support her I drink very little now.

Sure makes going out to eat a lot cheaper. And I lost about 10 pounds almost immediately.

Today marks 4 weeks of no alcohol. Still feel like I'm going strong.

I don't consider myself an alcoholic, but I had indeed become accustomed to having a drink or two every evening while cooking dinner or visiting with my wife when she got home from work. Mostly, that all started when Covid came around because I was working from home every day (still am).

Sometimes, those 1-2 drinks turned into 4-5, just because I was having a good time (visiting, watching a show, cooking, etc).

Feeling much better now. Sleeping better, more energy. Mornings are a lot easier.

Was a heavy social drinker (sports and neighborhood hang outs) and putting alcohol down 3 years, 4 months ago was the best decision I ever made.

I tell all my friends who are clearly curious and know they should make a change "It's different for everybody, but it works for me."

If anyone wants to chat, hit my DMs. The benefits are worth it. My favorite benefits are 1. how I feel every morning and 2. the effort and focus I put into my work and family now. Not that I ever didn't put effort into those things, but clearing up so much time-wasting freed me up to be much more high achieving.

Had our first office happy hour of the year and drank boring sparkling water. I was surprised to see a group that's normally 80% drinkers was down to 20% but was kinda nice to see that everyone just kinda rolled with it. The beer looked pretty good but I wasn't dying for it or anything.

I could probably cut back. How many handles of vodka a week is too many?

So you're starting to "feel"... again. Congrats on the 80 days! Here's looking to many more.
