A recent post** suggested the dearth of good-looking servers in local eateries was due to a mass migration to OnlyFans.

I am too cheap to eat out much, but this looked to be an interesting hypothesis. So I thought to take a look at OnlyFans. BTW, my wife does the books and she is even cheaper than I am. So this is the closest I am likely to ever get to OnlyFans. :-)

Some back of the envelope numbers only considering OnlyFans. This is order of magnitude, so take the numbers with a grain of salt. And of course, there are many other venues for sex-related work.

OnlyFans participation estimates:

  • 5 million OnlyFans creators currently <-- 4.2 million creators (Nov 2023) last official count - up 1M over 2022)
  • 2.5 Million US women creators currently <-- one source says creators 70% women and 70% US and we'll assume independence)
  • 2.0 Million US women creators between 20 and 30 currently <-- my SWAG that 80% of creators are between 20 and 30

1 in 10 US women (20-30) are making content on OnlyFans??? <-- There are ~20 Million US women between 20 and 30.

Let's say your hypothetical daughter in this age range has 5 girl-friends. The chances that NONE of these 6 young ladies are on OnlyFans is about 50-50.

OnlyFans rewards:
The average creator makes < $2,000 per year. And this number has been distorted upward by the top 1-2% making really big bucks.

Why are so many young women choosing online sex work (sexualized content for $$$) for so little financial reward? Fluoride in the water?

And, is this a good thing or bad for our society?

BTW, I have no issue with the individual's choices but do have issues with the impact on our society.

**Sorry, Good Ag, I searched for your post to acknowledge your inspiration, but I failed. Alas, you were probably wrong; it seems most don't make enough to give up their day jobs.

this could be an interesting statical discussion.

I looked up a few numbers and the top 1% make greater than $6k monthly. That's on par with being a school teacher.

Oh, goody.

An internet poster used the term "order of magnitude".

This is officially an official and seriously official internet viral moment.

I follow an acquaintance from high school on instagram. She appears to be single with 2 school age boys.

On one of our stories on instagram she posted a link to her OnlyFans. She doesn't have much content so I can't imagine it's making her rich. Seems like a lot of risk for extremely marginal gains.

Check your social media for the deluge of user-created content. These people spending time making these videos and likely pulling in less than $1000 a year.

But they're convinced they are going to be the next content creator or influencer.

No way that percentage relates to the general population. I'm guessing many have multiple accounts under different names designed for specific "demands". Some make more bucks than others.
It only took me a year to figure out this place is nuts!

In 2023 onlyfans paid out $6.6 billion dollars to the creators which is more than all of the NBA players combined.

What is the relevance of this stat?

There are 450 players in the NBA at any given time making an average of $12 million per year.

$6.6 billion divided by 5 million OF users is $1,320 per year per user, and that number is radically skewed by the top .01%.

99% of OF users probably make about $500 a year.

Because even $2000 isnt "little financial reward" when you're like 19 years old for most people.

Aren't teachers paid on 10 month contracts? Also, you have to have 14 years experience to reach $54k in my district.

They get paid for 9 months of work but paid over 12 months. That's why they don't make more money. 75% of the work as the rest of society.

Had a friend in my district back home who said they could opt to get it in 9 months or paid over 12 months.

my wife is 20 ish years in education and is knocking on the door of 6 figures. (Plus retiring under 60 with half her salary or so for life)
How much do you think the average American is making these days to where teachers aren't making more money than a lot of people?

For our district here in DFW, starting salary is 62k and tops out at 76k. Retirement age depends on when the teacher started working, but for the purpose of this thread, we will say the teacher started in the last five years....so they would have to work until the age of 62.

there is a set retirement age based on when you started? Are you sure that's how it works?

My wife's district has a chart of age vs years of service. She can 'retire' whenever she wants, and her benefit amount will be more or less based on those two factors.

She started at age 35ish. so she's on the diagonal that starts on 55/20. If she goes to 60, she'll get 54.7% of her 'HAS' which is average of the 5 highest salary years while contributing to the plan. In today's dollars, that's pushing $50k, for the rest of her life, with an annual increase for COL.

I also find it hard to believe a DFW teacher tops out at $76k, just 20% higher than a starting teacher. as I remember, it was not like that in CFISD where my wife started her career.

My mom worked in RISD. Retired 14 years ago and when she retired she was making ~$45,000 and a new hire was making ~$40,000. 2023-24 Richardson ISD Pay scale. They have since changed it for the 24-25 year to where the gap is actually decently sizable between 0 years and 20 years of experience.

I just double checked the pay scale....the 62-76k pay range is unfortunately accurate.

The retirement numbers i saw were for full retirement through TRS. I know the retirement calculation changed right before my wife started teaching, I double check the retirement eligibility, the rules were admittedly confusing to follow.

1/2% raise a year?

Jesus. Our SD is like 1-2%. Wish I could remember what cfisd was, I don't remember feeling about it like I do seeing that chart.

So when your mom retired, she was making less than teachers who hadn't taught as long?
Shouldn't they all be on the same salary chart?
62strat

Ok I found the current cfisd chart anyway.

Salary after 25 years is 20% more than starting ($76 vs $63. )
40 years of service is almost $90k.

https://humanresources.cfisd.net/careers/teacher/teacher-compensation

Richardson chart above it's 10% after 25 years. Sorry, but that's a pretty lousy pay schedule.
hph6203

They amended it this year. 24-25 pay schedule is definitely improved. $61k starting, $500/yr of experience 1-10, $1000 11+ up to 35.

Just was pointing out that there are places where it's that bad. 3 years in my current job out of college I was making 3x what my mom was making after 20+ teaching.

$61k starting and $86k peak seems fairly reasonable compensation.
