At the end of the movie, the mother ship is destroyed which takes the other ships' shields down. The humans then try to attack the big ships head on but they are too large for the little missiles they were throwing it them.
The ship's main weapon opens up ready to destroy the military base when the drunk crop dusting pilot sacrifices himself by attacking the main weapon which creates a chain reaction and blows the whole ship up.
This vulnerability is then supposedly communicated to the rest of the world on how to destroy the big ships. Why didn't the aliens just not open up their main weapon and not expose themselves?
