Can't find it in the house and wife is worried it somehow got thrown away. I'm guessing I'm screwed? I'm reading different things online in regards to needing a passport to get into Canada.

Is that the only acceptable document needed to travel by air to and from US to Canada?

you need a passport, passport card, and enhanced driver's license if you are in one of those states that have them, or a nexus card to get into Canada.

to get back into the US,. you can provide same along with some additional documentation incl original birth certificate

that said. plenty of stories of people trying and getting approval with more/less documentation. so some hit/miss based on the day you go, who you get to review your docs, etc.

Canada web site says:
https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/td-dv-eng.html
US citizens or permanent residents
If you are a US citizen or permanent resident, you must carry proof of citizenship such as a:
  • passport
  • birth certificate
  • certificate of citizenship or naturalization
  • certificate of Indian Status along with photo identification
  • US Permanent Resident Card
If you are a US permanent resident, ensure you carry proof of your status such as a US Permanent Resident Card.

Yes, you need a passport. I used to work there and needed a passport to cross.

You can get a same-day passport in a lot of major cities. I know people who have done it and it's all day process, but I would call first thing in the morning and find out when the closest/soonest appointment is.

You 100% do need a passport.

If you live in the Houston area they have an office to get one on an emergency basis but it will be expensive. Not sure about DFW but I know when I had to do this several years ago, Houston was the only one in state that I'm aware of. The passport agency may have expanded capabilities by now.

Just looked. It looks like there is an urgent passport office in DFW and one in Houston. You have to call or go online to make an appointment. They do not take walk-ins.

The expedited passport companies are not suitable for this situation. You can only get a passport quickly directly through these offices run by the department of state.

And if you go (to a passport office), be sure to bring copies of plane tickets/itinerary, to document that your trip is on a short deadline.

Good luck!

I travel quite a bunch and I don't know of anywhere where you can get a new passport in a 24 hour period. When expedited my government passport it took almost 10 days. That was with it being delivered by diplomatic pouch.

I got a passport renewed at the Houston State Department passport office in 24 hours in 2018. Had to show plane tickets for a trip oversees that departed within 2 weeks.

That was pre-pandemic, but the process was fairly painless.

Must have changed it. Couple years ago my mom didn't realize her passport was expired until the night before a trip. I had her at the Dallas office at 7:30 and we were out of there by 10:30 with a passport in hand without an appointment. Missed her flight, but Air Canada got her on the next flight and she was on her way by 1:30PM.

Or try this.

Say "ayy" after each sentence, tell them you love maple syrup and poutine, act passive aggressive and they will think you are one of them and let you in without any problem.

no it's not.

I did this for work, it was a 30 minute process.. by appointment only and proof of travel within 36 hours or so.

Sounds like you got lucky. The couple of people I know who did it this year had early morning appointments and didn't receive their passports until almost 5.

Canada is a lot more strict than you'd think. My US based company has ops there, and I travel every couple of years. They are very protective of their jobs so I am very careful in how I answer their questions as to why I'm there. Been really grilled a few times

that seems weird, the idea is it's done right there in person.. show them your stuff, then wait a bit and they make it.

Mine was a recently expired renewal maybe that had something to do with it.

It can be done.

My wife fell into a weird situation where she escorted some special cargo aboard a FedEx plane, and it turns out they require a passport for identification and check-in, even for domestic flights. She had to go through some hoops and get an appointment with the passport office in Houston, but she walked in with paperwork at 8 in the morning and picked up her passport after lunch.

I got stuck in Hanoi because all of my pages were filled in with stamps and visas slips. Was working with govt agency ant the time and the embassy couldn't get a 24hr turnaround. The staff said passports were handled differently since 9/11.

One of the benefits of working for the world's largest defense contractor.

When I started there. they wanted to send me to the UK on a special operation the next week. I didn't have a passport.

They took me to a special office, took my pictures and got the paperwork filled out. By cob the next day, I had my passport in hand.

And now they keep my passport up to date and handle whatever other special paperwork is required for some countries.

I'll really miss this benefit when I retire.

I know a guy that can get you into Canada without a passport. He usually gets people over a different United States boarder. How do you feel about riding in the back of a hot 18 wheeler with no water and putting things up your butt?

If you don't already have it, go to the Federal Building on Smith with plane tickets and birth certificate. Appointment helps. They can get you out same day for like $100. Or you can pay an expediter $500 for the same thing.
