Kiko's is the town Fav. On the west side I like La Costenita, Hi-Ho or Cafe Ole. La Playa isn't bad.
Seafood: Yardarm, Railroad Station, Docs, Snoopy's.
Diner: Definitely Price's Chef
Italian: Luciano's
Steak: Republic of Texas on top of the Omni, and the Black Sheep Bistro (on the island). I've head that Prime Steakhouse and Whiskey Bar is really good.
Favorite restaurant is Vietnam.

It's been a long time. But, Snoopy's' used to be the jam

If I had to pick 5 places I had to eat at forever that weren't all the same food, I'd pick Z Counter, Vietnam, Yardarm, Xpress Burger, and MGs Pizza (technically Robstown).

Grew up in the area in the '80s, so Black Diamond Oyster Bar hit be with a bat of nostalgia. My list would have been from then which I'm sure most are probably defunct:

Water Street Oyster Bat (would assume that is still open?)
Monterey House, Old Mexico, Gallaghers, Steak & Ale, Crystal's Confectionery ….

Lived in Portland until 3rd grade.
Visited back when my dad had a house on Lake Mathis (don't call it Lake Corpus Christi).
It's been a long time. 25 years easily, except for a trip with the scouts to overnight on the Lexington.
Yardarm is better than Black Diamond but it is also more expensive. Both are good though.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.
Pretty much any restaurant in Lamar Park is pretty good. My sis and I try them out when I come down to visit her.

Yes. It is on Water street, a block down from the Omni. Make a reservation. You'll love it.

Saltwater Grill of the beaten path and is very good. Great fried shrimp.

Will 2nd Saltwater Grill. Great non-fried options as well.

Costa Sur is also pretty solid. Peruvian food.

Surfing Crab!
We tried the Flounder House in Port A about 20 years ago after several really high recs. I was hung over as hell and the dish I got was made with red wine but I had 2 bites and immediately threw up. The rest of the group threw up as well. Needless to say, it was a bad experience. The waitress should have known we were all hung over. I'm pretty sure we met her at Sharky's the night before. I don't recommend the Flounder House.
Sounds like that problem was with your group.
