Died on a life flight. Was gone for 40+ seconds before flight paras managed to fight off the forever sleep for me. Apparently got real close to it again on the table. Car accident.

Numerous overseas ME conflict stuff. More than most I would wager. Also nearly drowned in San Diego as a kid. Small rip tide got me but wasn't too bad really and should have been ok until it rolled me along sea floor and wrapped me in kelp. Managed to get free eventually and surface but when I say it was literally the last second from panicked energy to going limp, it could not be any closer. I think I would have been ok in the end though because a good samaritan did notice I went under and didn't come back up and was on his way to investigate when I surfaced. He actually swam me back as I was completely spent.

I hate the ocean to this day. F that and F everything in it.

I did not. I remember the tire blowing, a very sharp turn, and then a camera flash of a memory in the helo of a loud, hot environment with someone bent over me. Then next conscious thought I had was waking up in the ICU some days later sooooo confused. My first thoughts were I can't move and it hurts.

That's it. Nothing special I can recall. I'm still super bummed I never got to meet the flight paras who saved my life that day. Or the good samaritan who kept me going until further help got there. From my understanding, a no **** trauma nurse saw it, stopped, and then crawled into the vehicle (it was on its side) for me. What an absolute badass.

I grew up just outside of NYC before Rudy came in and cleaned it up. It was worse then than now. (Not by much though.)

Worked there on and off in my late teens, but went there regularly as a mid teen and many times did not remember how I got home.

Even though I was the one who usually drove. Because my friends were always more messed up.

Almost my entire family (my grandparents, parents, most aunts and uncles and cousins) and I almost got taken out in 2004 when the fro river flooded. The water was up to the last step of the basement in the rental house we were staying at. Had to get rescued by boat.

Picked up an old saddle off the ground and put it on my right shoulder and carried it about thirty yards and set it in a trailer. Was about to walk down to the house but decided to put it in the barn instead. Went to pick it back up and there was a copperhead under it ready to strike. I didn't get bit and it probably would not have killed me, but to know I was walking with a copperhead inches from my neck and face still sits with me 25 years later.

That exact scenario is why my dad quit hunting. He also survived being a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, so he wound up getting shot at a lot.

They shocked 9 times and put a thumper on my chest. Got to the hospital and was shocked 4 more times. Woke up 3 days later.

I couldn't tell ya. I used to go into music stores in Highland Mall back in the day. One of them wasn't too far from the food court but it wasn't Blockbuster music. I would go into any and every music store and they were all very similar.

One that I went to would allow you to bring a cd to a station, open it and play it. You had to hand it to an associate. That place wasn't at the mall. Seems like Blockbuster music got into the game a little later

I was in the hospital 9 days with rhabdomyolysis with CK levels over 14,000. Normal CK levels for men is in the low 100s...even less than a 100 I think.

I called the doctor from my office after I went to the bathroom and discovered my pee was literally the color of Coca Cola. Went to urgent care, showed them a picture of the urinal, and they said I needed to go to the ER right away. Stand alone ER transferred me to a major hospital after running labs.

We never knew the actual number because the doctor told me printouts stop at 14,000. Nothing seemed to help, and I had multiple scans and an open biopsy of my tricep muscle done. Fortunately, my kidneys didn't suffer any damage, which is the biggest threat with rhabdo.

They finally gave me oral and intravenous steroids and I got to go home.

Now I just have to stay well-hydrated and be careful working out!

Was this exercise induced or did you just spontaneously develop rhabdo?

I've done the exercise variety twice to myself prior to med school, although stupidly never sought medical attention. Most cases in young, healthy individuals with no medical conditions don't really need hospital admission if they have normal kidney function and have normal amount of urinary output. Docs tend to freak out about CK levels, but CK levels don't really correlate well with prognosis when talking about exercised induced rhabdo in young, healthy individuals. I've seen levels in the 100s of thousands in individuals that had no complications.

Took some pretty heavy indirect fire in Iraq one evening. Hit a tent of fire fighters two tents down from us and one got killed.

5 years old - tripped while carrying a screwdriver and it went up my nose and slightly into my brain cavity (real close call)

near drowning kayaking on Russel Fork river house rapid (REALLY REALLY close call)

near drowning on Guadelupe river while kayaking in flood (I had a 50/50 shot)

heart attack while kayaking on Upper Yough river (Should have died)

rolled a Subaru WRX a few times down a hill (maybe 10% chance of dying)

Shotgun put directly in my face in Houston (1% chance)

handgun put into my face in Dallas (2% chance)

Emergency open heart surgery a couple months ago (technically I was dead for about an hour)

There are others but I am not remembering them. I have not lived a boring life.

Some guys tried to kidnap me in Romania one time so probably that

I got drunk in eorie nord Romania. Some dudes offered to take me to my hotel. They gave me a cigarette that was laced with something and locked the doors. Took off opposite direction of my hotel. Car cut us off on highway and they had to slam on brakes to not rear end the guy.

I popped the lock up (the old style nubs that went down into the door) and jumped out. Guy delivering food picked me up. They exited and tried to come after us but their car was a pile of *****

I made a series of bad decisions that led to this happening that night. Biggest of which was prob telling the dudes I was American and worked offshore. 100% avoidable, 100% my fault
