Would you sacrifice yourself to save a stranger's life? I wouldn't, but one of my friends said he would if it was the only way to save them.

Nope. I'm far too valuable to my family and frankly the planet.

My wife would kill me if I did.

No one thinks about that type of stuff in advance. In a moment of crisis it just happens because it always happens so fast. If I saw something happening to a woman or a a kid I'd probably try to intervene and hopefully not sacrifice myself but I want to always help someone if I can. You have to be smart about your moments though and it's not like movies where you can rush a guy with a machine gun and win. And I'll be honest, It'd be scarier if the guy looked like he could whip me. But if there's a true emergency, I'd say a super quick prayer and God will lead me on what to do, whether that's to intervene or at least just call for help.

This probably is way too serious an answer for what this thread was created for lol but here it is anyway.

Depends. If the stranger is a child, maybe.

The GB answer is yes, if she has big cans.

That isn't really the way it works. Nobody accepts their own death for another, except for maybe their own kid.

It is really more of a question of "how much risk would you take to save someone?" Would you run into a burning building? Would you run into a gunfire situation?

The most risk I have taken on to save another was to jump into some class 4/5 rapids to save an unconscious drowning guy. He would 100% have died had I not done it, in fact I thought he was already dead. I didn't really think about it, but obviously I took on some big risk to save him. Long story short, I got him out, gave him cpr, and carried him out of the gorge to a passing car. He lived and only repercussions were some badly broken legs. I sucked in a lot of water and took some big rock shots while helping him.

I'd like to think I would, but who knows what I'd do when actually confronted by the situation.

My friend said even if the stranger was a convicted murderer, he would still sacrifice himself for them if there was no other way to save them.

Probably not. I have minor kids and a husband whose lives would change dramatically if I weren't here.

Depends on the situation. I would always save someone of if I could. Not gonna die for a rando tho, no.

He's really religious and said that he would rather die than push a button that has a 1 in 1 billion chance of killing a random person and a 999,999,999 in 1 billion chance of doing nothing, so he has very high moral standards, but he's not lying.

He's not lying to you. He's honest in what he's telling you. He's lying to himself.

He doesn't exist. Every single one of OP's threads follows this basic pattern.

"Would you do [x]? I wouldn't, but my friend said he would."

You should follow his crime threads on Aggieland board.

I'm sure your friend thinks he would sacrifice himself, but when it comes down to it he wouldn't.

I have seen it happen and most people freeze and watch. Not calling your friend a liar, just saying he doesn't know any better

No way.

Only people I sacrifice my life for are my 2 kids.

Serious answer- if I was single maybe.

As a husband and father of children I have far more responsibility to them and to their development than to the life of a random stranger. I took an oath to them (I view my marriage vows made before God as vows that extend through marriage to my children).

HOWEVER there are some sacrifices and risks I would take in order to give my kids a good example knowing that it would be better for their development for me to have died giving them such an example than to live and give them a bad example.

It would depend on the scenario-

Shooter in a public place or school and if I have the opportunity to stop said shooter by confronting them?

Yes the example of showing my kids the necessity to confront evil to save the innocent is important. I would probably take the risk.

A stranger lying motionless in some rapids as shown above- probably would not. No way to know if he is alive and when people do white water rafting they know and accept the reality they could die. They got themselves into that mess.

These questions by OP are so naive. So many of these type of situations aren't ones you sit and contemplate whether you take action. Either your instincts and reflexes jump in or you go the other way in fear. And the question then becomes if you go the other way can you really live with yourself? Can your family? I know my daughter would never talk to me if she knew I just looked the other way while a woman/girl was raped and/or murdered, or a young child was abducted and trafficked. I know I couldn't just go on with life and it not eat me up from within.

Nope.

I don't know if this random stranger is a bad person. The person could be a pedophile for all I know.

Couple factors...

We weren't rafting, we were kayaking and he had asked to join our group a couple hours earlier and we said yes. Didn't know him but i knew who he was and knew he was very competent for the river. When someone is in your group there is an unwritten obligation to care for each other.

That being said, I don't know for a fact if he would have done the same for me as the other 6 people there all were just watching and no one else did anything. That is what I mean when I say people freeze. Not blaming anyone, but people freeze up and do nothing way more often than doing something.

I have had one die on me while I was giving CPR. She probably died before I started CPR and I blew into a dead person's mouth for half an hour. It was the first time I was ever in that situation. I don't think I did anything wrong, she was under water a LONG time before I got her. Never met her before, tried like heck, all I know is she was 23 and named Ashley. I have saved 2 with CPR. Being in those situations before probably lead me to act instead of watch.

Another friend of mine drowned last year. I have done that rapid that got him hundreds of times and I wish so much I had been there to try to get him out. Not blaming the people he was boating with, but I have no idea if they froze or tried. His body was stuffed in a bad spot, maybe no one could do anything. I know I would have tried like heck to save Karl. He was the 14th person I have known to drown in a river.

And that is why I just don't really believe a person can plan to sacrifice themselves. No one knows what they will do until the crap hits the fan.

Was not putting u down for ur decision. U saved a dude. That is awesome. Had it been me with me having kids- I would not have done so. I have more responsibility to live for my family than to risk dying for a stranger. That's just me.

In my post, I Was trying to think up a scenario where someone would be in danger due to their own choices as opposed to some evil being perpetrated on them and ur example Was the first thing I could come up with.

No worries, I know you werent saying it was a dumb decision by me. Before my kid was born I lead a very adventurous life and I was regularly in places to help others when they made mistakes.

Your post EXACTLY proves my point. Most people don't accept true danger to help another. Possibly fear, possibly logic, possibly lack of having the tools needed to help..
