Not having sex is considered to be "pure".
Conversely having sex, you become "impure".
This, along with the biological fact that sex results in babies and keeps the species going.
What a weird religion.
Back before the 1900's noone wore condoms.
First, women's bodies receive bodily fluids from men when they have hetero sexual intercourse. These fluids lead to both babies and can contain diseases.
Historically, before the advent of DNA testing, there was literally no way to know the identity of the father of a child. You could be 100% sure who the mother was. But if the woman was having sex with multiple dudes or you couldn't be reasonably sure she was having sex with only one dude (via marriage) then there was no way to know for sure. Biologically, it is not fair to expect men to spend the tremendous resources necessary to raise a child that is not theirs and biologically men don't want to do it.
And in case u want to pull that "women don't cheat or lie as much as men" line....there are some excellent podcasts from people who work at paternity testing centers. Additionally from DNA research we know that between 10-16% of modern men are raising kids that aren't theirs. So...yeah...women lie. It happens.
Additionally....Male bodily fluids can contain diseases. The female body in the act of intercourse receives them.
So yes, sex before marriage makes you impure because if a woman is receiving bodily fluids from multiple people there is no way to be sure she isn't carrying a disease. Additionally women are far more likely to get infected from a partner who has an STD than a man is.
So purity means 2 things. 1) we know if there is a kid who the father is. And the father can move forward confident that he is devoting his life to raising his biological offspring and encourages him to make whatever sacrifices he needs to in order to insure a better life for them. 2) we know the woman is STD free.
You look at it through modern eyes and say "stupid".
Because u are ignorant of the historical necessity of the family and what happens to cultures in which promiscuity is desired and encouraged.
Cultures in which it was socially permissable for a
Women to be promiscuous were far less stable and less successful technologically and culturally than societies where the women waited for marriage to have sex. These cultures and civilizations lost and were absorbed or destroyed by the other more stable cultures
We see that today. The number one predictor of whether a child will be put in jail, graduate highschool, or be successful is whether there is a father in the home.
You say it's a stupid religion. I say that you are ignorant of history and why cultures picked up on what was successful and what wasn't.
Western culture is a cultivation of trial and error over the course of tens of thousands of years of observation of human behavior and what works and what doesn't. It's pretty arrogant to believe that:
1) your ancestors were stupid. Wrong. You are here because your ancestors were the successful humans who won against billions of other humans. It stands to reason they knew a thing or two otherwise your ancestors would have lost and you wouldn't be here.
2) you are so much smarter than your ancestors that you can ignore tens of thousands of years of success and know precisely what the consequences of such disregard will be. Wrong. Those traditions are built on the observation of human beings over the course of millenia. Your 30-40 years of existence is a drop in the bucket compared to the well of experience such traditions are built on. Casually disregard them at your own risk.
If you observe how modern society is falling apart, and how quickly it regressed once the concept of the family was destroyed back in the 1960's its astonishing.
Women today have so little reverence for the responsibility they bear and how society for good or ill is built on their shoulders.
It's not good for children to grow up in a house where mom is dating a different guy every month. There is no stability in that. It's not good for children to lack a positive male role model in the house.
Talk to women who struggle to find a good mate and have trouble being able to identify good men to have relationships with and almost universally they are from divorced homes where there was no father. They don't know what a good man looks like or acts like because they never saw their mother have a good relationship with one much less keep one.
Talk to men in prison who never had a father who showed them how to be forthright and develop integrity and grit and strength of character and so they had to try to learn about those things from young male role models they had in their circle of friends or on the streets who had bravado but none of the positive characteristics that makes a man dependable and a good partner for his wife and a good member of society and how much they would have wished to have a better example in their life to keep them from such a destructive path. It's awful.
You denigrate the traditions of religion with casual disregard but those traditions have far more meaning and are far more purposeful than simply "we want to control a woman's sex organs". And you demonstrate your own utter ignorance when you do so.
