I think that it was either in the spring of '90. Things weren't going well and that is when the "Save The Bird, Eat a Monster" marketing campaign began.

I got to A&M in the fall of '92 and it was known by that time.

This.

Also, Freebirds used to be legitimately good food. It's been terrible for years now. Shame.
Isn't it weird how everything stop being good when you don't live there anymore?

The other thing is that back in school days, one's almost always a lolpoor. During those days even Taco Bell and McD taste good. As you get richer, you try better places and your taste expectation move up. Then you go back to your old haunts and complain that it sucks. Actually you have moved on with time.

I used to go to Fatburger a lot, the place on Univ Dr behind McDonalds. Demolished now. I am sure if that still existed, I would complain too. Back then their Philly Cheese Steak was to die for.

This thread makes me recall weighing the option of I should spend the extra 75 cents on guacamole and how that would affect my ability to do laundry that week. Also, I used to have the high score on the ms Pac-Man machine at fat burger.

That was my Sunday spot from '04 - '06. I would get a Monster steak with cheese beans and queso for $6.00 even. Now the same thing is well over $12 and half as good.

Best place to eat on campus in 07-08 was The Tomato Bar when it was still in the basement of the Commons.

Super Monster in the late 90s. Didn't charge for extras so it was $7.20 out the door and could get 2 big meals.

As others have said, 1990. I was a freshman in the great Walton Hall in the fall of '90 and remember my RA walking in to the dorm carrying a coffee can sized burrito and talking about how awesome it was. Went the next week and was an instant fan- and have the swag that I got for points to prove it.

I also agree that the 'Bird isn't what it once was, but it's still the best burrito opition out there.

I don't remember the machine or maybe we were there at different times but there used to be a life size cutout of Troy Aikman inside. Do you remember seeing that?

Ah the good old days.

It was 90. I remember it opening and couldn't understand why no one was going. Ended up talking to the manager just about everytime I went in, there was nothing else for them to do. I went there a lot, living in Law Hall. My recollection, and I drunk a lot back then, as I do now, we had a conversation Spring of 91. He said he couldn't afford to stay open in the Summer but was hoping to re-open in the Fall. Blew up after that. A line out the door every day.

At least that is the way this olds remembers it.

Was the 319 University Dr location the one you went to when it opened?

That is the one I went to in 1997.

yeah, the Northgate one was the original in College Station.

In the late 1990s, they opened up at the Hancock Centre in Austin. Pretty soon, the sips started thinking it was an Austin thing.

They expanded a lot in the 2000s and 2010s. I used to enjoy going to the one in Palo Alto, CA but, I think most of the locations outside Texas closed well before the scamdemic.

I was never a big consumer of the Freebirds type menu, but I understand Chipotle was pretty stiff competition.

Disclaimer: I have never been in a Chipotle.

Class of 2011 checking in. The Meximelt from Pickles (I think that's what the deli was called) in the Underground was as good as it gets.
