This thread is just reinforcing my contention that this board is old as ****.

It has been 20 years since the rainbow bridge got torn down. To put things in perspective, Guion Hall (the assembly hall they stood where Rudder Center is today) was torn down about 15 years before I was a freshman..

With all due respect to General Rudder, I would much rather look at this building than that tower that is there today.

No kidding. Rudder is hideous

I always kind of liked Rudder.

I will say that not being able to see/visit Guion Hall will always be one of my major disappointments. Pretty much everyone I know who has been in it said that it was by far the most beautiful building on campus. Apparently it had a lot of ornate architectural bling and fancy light fixtures.

Somewhere around on Texags is a fossil_ag post about Guion Hall and the demolition. Supposedly that building was built hell for stout like a bomb shelter and did not down easily.

Of note: John I Guion, the namesake of Guion Hall, had a son, David W. Guion who is the songwriter of the song 'Home on the Range'.

Does anybody know someone who even used it. I was a walker. Never even took the bus from west campus to main.

I went over it a couple times.

I used it a few times as an obedient freshman and came to realize it must have been constructed as a hazing device when no one else was using it.

I don't recall that bridge still being there when I hit campus in 2002.

It's nuts that bridge was torn down over 20 years ago. It didn't quite make it to the explosion of digital photos of the mid-2000s, so it is interesting to see how absent it is on the internet.

I thought it was still around in 2005. I only went over that bridge once or twice. It sucked balls.

I'll tell you that bridge was awful to walk over 4 times a day during softball camp in 100+ degree weather in July (and then still walk to the fields). That photo brought back lots of memories. And ironically I remember thinking the food buffet at Cain Hall (think that's what it was called) was really good.

Food at Cain was said to be the best on campus.

Definitely.

I was fortunate enough to have a friend that wasn't an athlete who lived there and a GA as a suite mate. Was a great treat from Sbisa or fast food.

Is that a bell tower, or are you just happy to see me?

Back in the day I used it. Had a law class in Kleburg.

I always wondered on this - why did they make the clock face so small? Why not make it about 5x bigger?

Dabo man,

I am currently writing a book on businesses in the Bryan/College Station area primarily in the 1980s. Can I use this image in my book?

Thanks and gig 'em,

Because it wasn't about having a clock to tell time. The tower was given to A&M by Ford D. Albritton Jr. who said he noticed all Ivy League schools and other great schools all had clock towers. So, he thought that would help increase the prestige of A&M. No joke.

Also, when I was in school we'd always be shocked when we saw someone actually using the pedestrian bridge.

Always dreaded crossing the bridge on the run back to the Quad after a Friday night crap-out at the pig farm.

I just remember how pizzed everybody was when they built that bell tower because they had to relocate the Aggie WWI Memorial monument. It was pretty serious. The Redpots back in the day were about to lead a revolt. Some senior University leader had to come out and calm everybody down and basically promise everybody that the WWI monument would be relocating to a prominent location in a respectful way. I think people were mad because they thought that tower was just a monument to the vanity of the Albrittons. It's funny how with time you gain perspective and realize that relocating/eliminating things on campus- even significant things, has been going on for basically 150 years.

I had to learn the inscription on that WWI monument back in the day.

Where is it now?

It was on Simpson drill field right by the Albritton when I was at A&M, no idea where it is now.

Side story on the ped bridge:
After one of the late afternoon games, I had my son on my shoulders (class of '16, but then a 2-yr old) we were heading back to the car. Didn't realize how low the ramps were until that first beam that I ran my kid into…

I can't recall seeing it since then. It used to be called the Westgate Memorial.

From what I remember, hardly anyone used that thing. I certainly didn't when I parked in the gravel lot.

It took forever to walk the ramps of that thing. Either walk 1/4 mile to cross the bridge or just use the stoplight and walk across the street.

I went over it probably 100 times or more. As a freshman in the Corps, our CO used to always go over it on outfit runs.

Yeah, but you'd think it would've sunk in for you after he hit the second, or even the third.

Did a little research, it is now by the arches, just outside the quad.
