The KKs died out a long time ago.

And the original (as far as I know) secret society on campus was founded well before the 1920s.

Yes there were stickers (sp). It's a known fact.

The first secret societies at A&M came about because, after hours, when all chores, studying, and military activity was done - there wasn't jack else to do.

So the students came up with 2 literary societies on their own. Calliopean and Austin. Initially, there was only one, (I think Calliopean), but there were differing opinions - and Austin sprouted up to compete with the other.

These 2 groups - like 99% of the student groups on campus - were started by the students, and not officially recognized by the college. But you can look in the old yearbooks and read about them.

I suppose the other secret societies sprouted off from these - or at least these two were a starting point.

Let's see, if you had a secret society that you wanted to keep quiet and you had say someone from the administration sniffing around, it might make sense to start up rumors about a couple of "secret societies" and come up with names and spread rumors about what they did to signify their memebership.

Nahh, that would be too smart and people would probably actually believe that these organisations actually existed and some people might actually pretend that they were part of these organizations so that they can feel more important.

Nahh, nevermind, I must be going crazy.

Also, the "Stickers", or whatever, appear to be a continuation of the "Swastika Dancing Club". After the early foundations of the literary societies, a number of "dancing clubs" sprung up. If you look in the 1908 Longhorn, the Swastika Dancing Club is listed there. Joe Utay was the head of it that year. I'm assuming that after the swastika became known for more dubious reasons in the 30's that they shortened it to 'stika, which sounds like "sticker", or whatever.

The swastikas, KKs, and TTs are all mentioned in either John Adams' Keepers of the Spirit, or in George Sessions Perry's The Story of Texas A&M, which should be required reading for all Ags.

Gig 'em.

Wasn't the swastika originally some sort of Native American symbol that roughly translated to a the peace sign?

originally an Indian (like from India) symbol meaning unity. reverse it and flip it over, and you have the Nazi symbol.

Someone must have some details on the Stickers or True Texans (or at least must have heard some good rumors).

What have they been responsible for accomplishing in the past?

Are they two branches of the same group? If not, do some people belong in both?

Who are some famous members?

When did they start?

Where do they hold meetings? (It is sort of difficult to have meetings on campus if you are not a recognized student organization)

No body knows any of those things.

But everybody swears they still exist and will tell you that they know people in the organizations.

It is not difficult at all. Just walk into a room you want to use (as long as no one else is using it) and meet there. You could use the MSC, the Academic Building, Class Rooms, Rudder Tower, Dorm Rooms, etc.

Aggie99,

That is true. I guess the Stickers or True Texans would have to meet somewhere like Rudder Fountain and walk around until they found a room or area that wasn't being utilized. I guess what I meant was that it would be kind of difficult to SCHEDULE a meeting on campus if you are not a recognized student organization.

I knew a few guys in the Stickers. They were all young men who were really close, stayed single, and met with each other often in CS and travelled together on road trips. That lifestyle just wasn't for me as a Christian, but I don't judge others for it.

That is pretty funny about YARMY...haha. They are not a secret organization, but I remember when they started. They werent really recognized, and you couldnt just join. It was kind of an invitation thing. I think it was just a few guys who "started a club"....meaning, they made some Tshirts...and started having a good time.

IT was weird how it really caught on and there were lots of people who wanted to play along, but it was invite only. Pretty cool/fun if you ask me.

One of my kin was a stika, but he denies any knowledge thereof. I have my confirmations though, and it seems they may also call themselves the group???? Anybody ever heard of that?

Some of the stuff on this thread cracks me up. And none of the experts have any idead of what they are talking about.

I'll just say that the two main groups DO exist. They aren't related, but have been known to overlap once in a while. Basically we all just look out for one another - be it giving someone a job, or getting a kid out of a restricted weekend.

Oh I'm sorry - allow me to rephrase that for people that like to play games.

Some people are displaying myths, under the perception that they are a fact known by the author of the post.

Yarmy is far from secret. They sit out infront of dudleys all the time. And the infamous "Yarmy moaning contest" at chilifest was awesome.

Well put, Haff. You'd have to say 1908...that's one of the 2 volumes that I don't have available in my house. Dad's collection is only missing 1908 Long Horn and the 1895 Olio.

That wasn't really a True Texan thing. I don't remember the details, but that had to do with someting outside of A&M (like military). A few geeks picked it up that probably happened to be T's and the rumors started.

Otter - who is displaying myth?

Like Old Main, I'm also intrigued by the subject, but I've already spent a good deal of time in Cushing researching on my own.

I've posted a few details to the best of my knowledge - if any of the things I've posted are incorrect - call me out on it. I want to know if I'm wrong.

I think what is funny is there are guys, now expressing expert knowledge on this thread, that are reading this and probably getting a kick out of the fact that so many people care. If what otter (the sticker) says is true, then who the **** cares. If it is not true, who the **** cares?

It was fun to fart them off in college but we left it at that. And we did, a lot. We did that because it was fairly obvious in my class who they were and one admitted it in a fit of rage. Not many of them were people you really wanted to know. We decided they were friends because no one else would have them as such due to their egos. They had their key positions like yell leader, cav, one of the big 3 in the RV's, some one high on Corps Staff like the DCC, the obligatory bandmens, but couldn't effect change. They barely had any of the commands, so they were insignifigant. Good ol boys, doing good ol boy stuff.

Having said that, I think it is time to move on, so in order to get jobs or out of trouble it is good to be a sticker or a football player at A&M. Ok, got it. Lets leave the kids to play their kids games. Unless you are legitimately researching it as a A&M history.

In retrospect, I shouldn't make direct comments about people on here. That would be improper.
