An Hermes bag is going to retain something like 90% of its value.


Assuming you purchased it from the store, in many cases you would be able to sell it for more than you paid for on the secondary market. That's in part of it is because of how difficult it is to purchase one.

There's a waiting list and when your name comes up, you are invited to purchase the bag they have available. You don't really get to pick from a selection or options. You either purchase that bag or not.

So that's why the secondary market can get a little crazy. I know someone who was spending something like $30K a month buying Hermes bags for themselves and friends.

Yep, she loves it. I'd analog it to my custom Cayman boots. Yeah, it's pricey, but it will last a lifetime so sometimes you just want to treat yourself. We didn't finance anything, didn't not put money in savings, didn't feel any stress over the purchases and I love my boots like she loves her purse

There is zero shame in buying decent knockoffs of luxury items imo. Or hell, hard to get nikes. Wgas, 99% of people own this crap just so other people see that you own that crap.

Get her the bag, especially if it's a rare occurrence. While I would not spend that $$ on a bag, many of my friends do and enjoy those purchases/the use. However, I would spend that kind of $$ on something like a custom bbq smoker or ball tickets... which brings me joy. So, even if it's not something you value as something "worthy" of the cost, keep that in mind. And she'll appreciate it. At this price point, though, it doesn't appreciate. Unless it's a very rare one, there is no real aftermarket demand for which it would "appreciate" like Hermes or YSL (which it's not rare, or it would cost more).

That said, and this is generally speaking, I've seen this scenario before with friends, and if you don't, she'll either get it anyway on a lowkey basis and feel like an ******* doing it or will resent you for not letting her get it, and you'll hear about it at some point when you want to buy something that brings you joy in the same price range. And it's cheaper to keep her. Don't allow this to cause issues over a dumb thing that, in the end doesn't matter in the whole scheme of life. Just my 2c.

For two, people buy luxury goods to enjoy them, not necessarily as investments. Point taken. But how does one define value? Value is what someone else is willing to pay for something that you possess. This means that water can be more valuable than diamonds in some situations. So it is one thing to say that something will appreciate as justification for making the purchase, and totally another to actually get an offer from someone to buy. I feel that many make purchases and convince oneself about appreciation.
