An Hermes bag is going to retain something like 90% of its value.

Assuming you purchased it from the store, in many cases you would be able to sell it for more than you paid for on the secondary market. That's in part of it is because of how difficult it is to purchase one.

There's a waiting list and when your name comes up, you are invited to purchase the bag they have available. You don't really get to pick from a selection or options. You either purchase that bag or not.

So that's why the secondary market can get a little crazy. I know someone who was spending something like $30K a month buying Hermes bags for themselves and friends.

She still like it?

Yep, she loves it. I'd analog it to my custom Cayman boots. Yeah, it's pricey, but it will last a lifetime so sometimes you just want to treat yourself. We didn't finance anything, didn't not put money in savings, didn't feel any stress over the purchases and I love my boots like she loves her purse

There is zero shame in buying decent knockoffs of luxury items imo. Or hell, hard to get nikes. Wgas, 99% of people own this crap just so other people see that you own that crap.

Get her the bag, especially if it's a rare occurrence. While I would not spend that $$ on a bag, many of my friends do and enjoy those purchases/the use. However, I would spend that kind of $$ on something like a custom bbq smoker or ball tickets... which brings me joy. So, even if it's not something you value as something "worthy" of the cost, keep that in mind. And she'll appreciate it. At this price point, though, it doesn't appreciate. Unless it's a very rare one, there is no real aftermarket demand for which it would "appreciate" like Hermes or YSL (which it's not rare, or it would cost more).

That said, and this is generally speaking, I've seen this scenario before with friends, and if you don't, she'll either get it anyway on a lowkey basis and feel like an ******* doing it or will resent you for not letting her get it, and you'll hear about it at some point when you want to buy something that brings you joy in the same price range. And it's cheaper to keep her. Don't allow this to cause issues over a dumb thing that, in the end doesn't matter in the whole scheme of life. Just my 2c.

Also, @one safe place needs to put on a clinic... this response was amazing!!

Hermes Birkin 30 Bag Diamond Himalaya Blanc Crocodile White Gold Hardware

$ 525,875.00

No way I was going to spend that kind of money. Bought her a knockoff for only $488,465 and you cannot tell the difference. It did have one less diamond though.

It doesn't work that way. For one, psychologically, we place a premium valuation on things we own through the endowment effect. This is readily shown through experimentation, like the coffee cup experiment.

For two, people buy luxury goods to enjoy them, not necessarily as investments. The expectation of appreciating in value certainly influences the economics and the decision making, but that doesn't mean that an appreciation in market value should trigger a sale or that such an appreciation is enough to overcome the endowment effect. Think of the watch like a vacation property. You buy it to use it and enjoy it, it's a luxury not many people have, and it's real estate that will most likely appreciate. 15 years after buying it, it may be worth 50% more than what you paid, but if you still enjoy it, there is no utility in selling it. It's nice to know that it has appreciated, but unless the appreciation is worth substantially more than the utility of the property and the enjoyment of having it, there's no reason to sell it. As long as your friend still likes the watch, there's no reason for him to sell no matter how much it has appreciated.

Point taken. But how does one define value? Value is what someone else is willing to pay for something that you possess. This means that water can be more valuable than diamonds in some situations. So it is one thing to say that something will appreciate as justification for making the purchase, and totally another to actually get an offer from someone to buy. I feel that many make purchases and convince oneself about appreciation.

You said she doesn't spend a lot of money. Buy her the $2,000 bag. Get her what she wants. Then take her out for a meal and tell her how happy you are to have her.

After dinner hand her the matching wallet you bought her and she'll be set for a long long time.

My spouse doesn't spend a lot of money, at least not relative to other stories I hear

That said, she wants to buy a $2K Louis Vuitton bag as something that will both last and appreciate in value

I don't understand the allure, but I remember Nervy saying buying a nice bag that will last is worth it.

Told her it's the equivalent of me going out and buying a nice breitling watch, but it's not something I desire and accessories like this just make you a target for thieves more than anything.

Help me understand the desire for this

If you're looking at Breitling, of course you don't get it.

I should have never read this thread...

I was blissfully ignorant about that big orange box in the closet with "Hermes" on the side. I figured it was shoes/boots

It's not the $2,000 bags that are increasing in value. Those are the moderately priced, mass produced bags that are targeted towards middle class consumers who buy them because they think that's what rich people buy.
Somewhat disagree here. Most of my wife's LV's and YSL bags ($2k - $5k) have indeed appreciated a couple hundred $$ according to resale sites.

No, if you mean completely unused. She keeps them in their bags when she's not using them.

You should ask for a bid on your wife's to see if they would buy them from you for more than you originally paid.

Apropos of this thread, has GB ever done a "What will/do you spend too much money on?" thread? Would be interesting if it hasn't already been done. OP would, of course, need to preface with "InB4 "your Mom""

Hit the New Guitar Day thread on the Entertainment Board.

Probably some people that will gladly talk about music equipment expenditures.
