To those of you with children: Force them to major in Finance in undergrad

I went to a highly ranked competitive suburban public high school and took all honors classes. I am a millennial. I graduated top 1 percent of my class. I bring that up to tell you that I know all of the top students. I am doing OK but not as good as the people who majored in Finance.

There is unbelievable wealth in private equity, investment banking, hedge fund, VC, and corporate finance.

All the people who majored in Finance are doing extremely well.

All the people who majored in other things are doing mediocre to outright terrible.

I am talking about salary and quality of life which is pretty important in the current hyper-inflationary economic climate.

I know this might be controversial, but you will thank me in a couple of decades. 52-58 percent of millennials are still living with their parents and the number 1 reason stated is poor personal financial situation. Don't let that happen to your children.

I didn't major in it so I have no incentive to hype it up. It is not a coincidence that everyone who majored in finance is doing so great.

Money =/= happiness

Trust me, I chased money in my younger days and got it. Left me wondering what a 9mm tasted like I was so damn miserable. Left that life behind and literally making half of what I did a decade ago but my life is so much more enjoyable. Absolute zero regrets aside from not leaving that old life sooner.

Finance can be lucrative and a few may even enjoy it, but it is not even close to end all, be all. Instead I would just advocate trying to foster a love/respect for mathematics. It is the gateway to the more valuable and useful vocations out there. Finance included.

Or even just a love for learning in general. Trying to shoehorn a child into something like finance sounds like a guaranteed failure.

I also reckon teaching fiscal responsibility will go much further for your kids than trying to make them analysts. People are insanely bad with money these days. Millennials more than most. I probably legitimately know more people that are bad with their money than not. ****, most months that includes me as well. At least I know I am being dumb, which is something I guess.

There's no way this stat is true. Millennials are now like 26-41 years old. Not a chance.

"All the people who majored in other things are doing mediocre to outright terrible."

I majored in engineering, and I'm doing better than mediocre. I wouldn't change anything about my choice of major.

Maybe spend less time on F16 and you might do better.

What makes you say that? I've met a lot of olds who are insanely bad with money.

Nah, he had it right the first time. General TexAgsing is fine. Having a majority of your posts be in F16 means you're actively choosing to kill your brain cells.

I make 174K a year in a STEM field.

My high school classmates who majored in finance and are now in PE, IB, VC, and Hedge Fund make 500K to $1.25 M a year after bonuses.

I pay ridiculously high taxes on my 174k a year salary and ridiculously high property taxes as well. I pay my debt to society. I can do whatever I want with my free time. Including discussing politics. Considering that Republicans just won all 20 statewide races in Texas with a margin of 10-20 points, a large majority of this state agrees with F16.

You don't need to major in finance, or even go to college, to be financially literate. I'm rich beyond my wildest dreams with my lowly engineering degree.

It'll be interesting to see how the VC/PE world is affected by higher interest rates. With the cost of borrowing going up, it's getting harder to to make those acquisitions.

Give credit to yourself and your classmates, you are all doing very well in your careers. I think it has more to do with you and them being top students and staying motivated.

That's great that you pay your taxes like every other law abiding citizen in the state. It's not that hard to do, so I'm glad you're capable of doing it.

You're also free to F16, never said you weren't. Doesn't change the fact that F16 is an absolute cesspool of groupthink far right nonsense that kills your brain cells and your ability to think logically. Voting the for the same candidate as someone in F16 does not mean I agree with F16ers on 90% of the **** they spew.

I'm going to force my kids into professional sports careers. My former classmates that have entered this field are making MILLIONS AND MILLIONS. Plus they didn't really have to study much in college.

The salaries you are citing are not in the normal range for even the top earners for a finance major. Your friends success likely has very little to do with their undergrad degree.

Maybe you should've taken accounting if you're paying such high taxes on 175k a year.

If F16 is fat right today, you should've seen how right it used to be. Lots of left leaning folks have begun posting there. Way less group think than about a decade ago.

I stopped reading it after last year, but Trump did an absolute number on that forum. I don't really see how it could have been worse than what it got to with the Q following and Trump worship.

Apparently he's a lolpoor compared to his classmates, so he probably had to settle for a fatty.
