I'm going to force my kids into professional sports careers. My former classmates that have entered this field are making MILLIONS AND MILLIONS. Plus they didn't really have to study much in college.
lol - more people are pushing their kids into this than finance degrees.

think of how much money is wasted on 'select' sports so their kids can try for a college scholorship...and then be a pro obviously.

I don't agree with Money =/= happiness. If I had money, I could afford to do a lot more things that make me happy. As it is, I have little money and little happiness.

I stopped reading it after last year, but Trump did an absolute number on that forum. I don't really see how it could have been worse than what it got to with the Q following and Trump worship.

In 2009-2010 era, libertarians were the main competition on that board with R's. Only a couple liberal posters. At least now there is more diversity of opinion.

I was one of those libertarians. Although if I told you my positions you'd be "omg like literally worse than Hitler."

Just shows you how far the Overton window has moved as regards to what are socially acceptable thoughts and speech.

this is the stupidest thing i've read in a long time.

i studied ag leadership in college and got a job in finance. I was making a metric **** ton of money, bought a new high end european sports car for my 23rd birthday, everything. I was also working at least 75 hours a week. it sucked. yeah my boss drove a lamborghini murci but he never saw his family.
I don't get it. Can't you just stay in the industry and make a half **** ton of money while working 48 hours a week and still see you family?

I went to a highly ranked competitive suburban public high school and took all honors classes. I am a millennial. I graduated top 1 percent of my class. I bring that up to tell you that I know all of the top students. I am doing OK but not as good as the people who majored in Finance.

There is unbelievable wealth in private equity, investment banking, hedge fund, VC, and corporate finance.

All the people who majored in Finance are doing extremely well.

All the people who majored in other things are doing mediocre to outright terrible.

I am talking about salary and quality of life which is pretty important in the current hyper-inflationary economic climate.

I know this might be controversial, but you will thank me in a couple of decades. 52-58 percent of millennials are still living with their parents and the number 1 reason stated is poor personal financial situation. Don't let that happen to your children.

I didn't major in it so I have no incentive to hype it up. It is not a coincidence that everyone who majored in finance is doing so great.

Hmm…"Force your kids..". Not a parent yet? I would suggest maybe encouraging them to major or minor in it…but to experience work first. Money never equals happiness. Faith and hard work gets you much further than chasing the abyss Bud Fox

I majored in engineering, and I'm doing better than mediocre. I wouldn't change anything about my choice of major.

I majored in Chemistry and am also doing far better than mediocre. OP is too narrow-minded about what fields are valuable to get a degree in.

I make 174K a year in a STEM field.

My high school classmates who majored in finance and are now in PE, IB, VC, and Hedge Fund make 500K to $1.25 M a year after bonuses.

Two things here.

1. You wanted to anonymously brag about your salary on the interwebs
2. If all the finance majors you know tell you they make 500k+, then some of them are flat out liars.

Forcing your grown kids to do something is a great way to endear yourself to them.

I agree that having plenty of money to do whatever you want, and more importantly not stress about how you are going to pay your bills, would definitely help the mental health of most people but in the end money will not make you happy.

major in economics, then work in finance
Majoring in finance is a good way to learn nothing, aside from faking it...which is a skill in that industry

2. You specifically mentioned your $174k salary.

Definitely a balance. You need money to pay your bills and have what fun you need to have, but after that each dollar brings back diminishing returns of happiness. Some of the riches families I know are also the most ****ed up in ways that aren't always apparent to the outside. The few that I know that somehow managed to stay grounded while loaded however, have it totally awesome.

I can't speak from what it's like to live comfortably, but the times I've had the most jingle in my pocket was also the most unhappy times of my life.

There is bliss in living humbly.

Money does not solve all your problems. But money does solve all your problems that require money, which is an awful lot of problems for most people.

Corollary: If I had enough money to buy my own small private island, I'd WANT enough money to buy a large private island.

Usually the rich ones who run around showing they are rich have some really screwed up issues. The ones that no one suspect are filthy rich are the ones I agree have figured it out and have is awesome.

Nah, he had it right the first time. General TexAgsing is fine. Having a majority of your posts be in F16 means you're actively choosing to kill your brain cells.

Again. I pay ridiculously high taxes on my 174k a year salary and ridiculously high property taxes as well. I pay my debt to society. I can do whatever I want with my free time. Including discussing politics. Considering that Republicans just won all 20 statewide races in Texas with a margin of 10-20 points, a large majority of this state agrees with F16.

Wait wait wait. Just to be clear. Did you PAY you're ridiculously high taxes on your 174k salary?

Money is literally the way Finance majors and people in finance measure success. That's a circular argument.

Scientists, Educators, Engineers, Doctors, Farmers, Dolphin Trainers, etc all have different ways of measuring their success. If money was their main motivation in life, they would have sold their souls and gone to work in private equity.

I majored in English Literature and am doing far better than OP... success depends on how hard you work and making smart career choices, not your borderline-irrelevant college major.
