-dog nap on your lap
-cigar at the bar
-bourbon in a glass

buy different shades and genders.

interchange them randomly to see if the kids notice.

We're doing it for the first time this year. Got a kit from Etsy of preplanned daily things for the elf that is pretty fun. I don't hate it.

Pretty sure posting most any of those pics on today's Texags would get you a ban. Life used to be so much more fun around here.

I had to talk my wife out of doing elaborate things that the elf would do because that's clearly not sustainable. Also in a few years kid #1 would be telling #3 how great elf used to be but now all he does is pick a new spot to appear... One that's high enough the toddlers won't mess with him but low enough that it's not obvious he's just another piece of Christmas decoration.

Keep expectations low and you'll keep yourself sane. We're on our fourth year of it and still haven't forgotten or gotten caught yet.

Our second kid absolutely improves his behavior because of the elf. Not going to lie, I'll use it if it works. I think the older one is reaching the "we know the truth but it's still fun to pretend" point soon.

Two of my high school classmates (and we are olds) got married and they now do the elf on the shelf thing with a twist. She has him dress up as the elf and then takes pictures to post on social media nearly every day for 3 or 4 weeks before Christmas. It has a certain sadness about it. Nothing is worth all that, lol.

Been going pretty well this year. Last night elf climbed to the top of a 2 ft Christmas tree. Night before that he got stuck in the little basketball hoop. He's also built a pillow fort and made a Christmas tree on Lite Brite. Tonight he is bringing hot cocoa mix.
