Fun. Kids wake up excited to find it every day. We don't get overly creative/cute with it. Just move it and semi-hide it.

It's a fun thing for the kids and when you forget to move the elf one night and they ask why it didn't move, you can say it's probably because of something they did.

We did Elf on the Shelf last year and hated it. After a week, it went from being fun to just being annoying. I'm also pretty sure my three year old was skeptical the whole thing was even real. I told my wife we weren't doing it this year unless he asked about it. So far he hasn't.

And why's that different from every other day in your house? Regardless, my son named his "balls." So, there's that. We weren't even going to do it, but my MIL bought it for him last year. Didn't even ask us first.

He hasn't figured out the whole if you do this, then something else happens thing yet. He's ok with presents in bags but when it's wrapped up he just goes "mommy open it!"

Basically, the parents place the elf in a different location around the house every night so the elf can "watch" the kids and report back to Santa. Parents can get pretty creative with the locations. Last year, we had our elf fishing out of the sink, fighting our son's superhero figures, riding the train on his train set, things like that. It was fun for a week or so, then just became a chore. Not doing it this year.
