Nowadays, so few people actually want to work, I overtip just to reward them for actually showing up to work instead of relying on the government to support them.

Over a decade later and you're still hanging on to that? Horry sheet. Talk about rent free and you clearly missed the point of my comments anyway. Pathetic

If it's one of the handful of kids at my sonic that actually roller skate, they get the tip. If not, nope. Not that hard to bring me my route 44 tea.

Every business provides some service; some only provide services.

Who should be tipped and why?
Who should not be tipped and why?

You may not be a moron, but some people think you are.

So it's all just about being lazy then. Ultimately, that's why we all go to places like Sonic, because we're being lazy. Why else would you go there to get some nasty burger you could make better at home. If we're going to tip at Sonic, it seems to me, we should tip the people that is actually save us the most time, but I'm guessing you don't actually get out of your car and tip the cooks, right? Of course not, because the only reason you go there is because you're lazy and that takes to much work. Why does the carhop deserve the tip more than the person that actually saved you the most time? This isn't Applebee's, so the wages are probably the same. It's just easier to tip one over the other, even if the other really deserves it more.

Personally (and I'm guilty of this as well), I think it's odd how we pick and choose who gets our tip and who doesn't. Why do I tip the person that makes my cappuccino but not the person making my snow cone?
I am always wrong

Why DO you tip the person making your cappuccino? That's the dumbest **** I've ever heard. He's already being paid a full wage to make your cappuccino by his employer.

Well, you *******s got me. I decided to try this whole Sonic thing. Sure, I smoke a little weed now and then, but I haven't tired LSD since college. I called a friend who was able to get me some mushrooms, which I've NEVER done. HOLY SHEET! What used to be a simple pull up and order a burger situation turned into a nightmare, then a dream, then a nightmare. Then a dream again. I knew what was happening, but it still freaked me out when the waitress's face started melting into my tator-tots, which looked like hacked off finger tips. Another thing, the speaker really freaked me out. I thought the menu was communicating with me. It felt soft when I stroked it. My daughter who drove me there was cracking up and took a lot of video. How do I post it here, by the way? I'm not laughing about it yet, but maybe some other time. Anyways, overall I do not recommend tripping at Sonic.

You didn't have to go into the store, someone prepared your order?

If I'm standing up when I ordered and received a menu item, I am not tipping. I have no problem smacking $0 tip on your giant, indiscreet computer screen that you made sure everyone can see.

The one that pisses me off the most is at Dutch Brothers. I am in the drive-through, after they swipe my card they turn the iPad towards me, and ask which tip button would I like them to push. Then you have to have an overly personal conversation while you wait at the window.

1. No, bagging a to go order does not require more work than being somebody's waiter for an hour. That's just stupid and false.

2. I acknowledge it does require some effort, which is why I said I might do 5%.

I waited tables and pulled shifts putting out to-go orders at times. I am currently a partner in a restaurant. You can think it's stupid and false if that makes you feel better about being cheap, but it's 100% accurate in most cases

How much scratch is required to be partner in an arby's? Looking to diversify

With to-go orders, not every restaurant is the same. I worked in two different restaurants, and the first restaurant I worked at, the cooks boxed up the food, the kitchen manager or whoever was working the window put everything together in the bag, and the bartender took care of the transaction. If the person tipped, all that tip money went to the bartender who did the least amount of work. The second restaurant had to-go employees and they did everything besides cook the food. Taking food off a plate and making it presentable in a box was pretty difficult, especially if you got really busy.

Now when you pay with a card at the terminal it asks you if you want to tip. Seems like it's becoming more of the expectation.

They can ask all they want. It's up to me to give or not. And I don't give unless they actually do the service and do it well.
Money ain't free. No one is entitled.

First, pay off the 100s of 1000s of debt that you have before throwing money around, so you can come and boast about it on Texags. No glory in spending other people's money.

People like you are the reason why Uncle Joe is canceling debt these days and making everyone else pay for it.

Tipping at Sonic is stupid. There is zero difference in service to the customer with Sonic than any other drive thru place, absolutely no difference at all.
except, for those customers not wanting to wait in the drive through line, their food is brought out to them.

Your food is brought to your window, just like at McDonald's.
no, at McDonald's you wait in drive thru line. At sonic, you can choose to not wait in a line of cars in order to get your order in and be served food more quickly, but then someone has to bring it out to your car, simply because you didn't want to wait in the drive thru line.

You've been to sonic right?

I can walk inside a McDonald's at get my food faster than the drive thru. All you're doing is tipping someone for walking 10 feet to your car.
that's correct, now you seem to understand.

So the next time you're at McDonald's and they tell you to pull into one of the parking spots, and someone brings your food to you, I hope you tip them for their walk to your car.

What times we live in. We pay people for walking when it is part of their jobs.Should I tip them for breathing too?

Good point. It just feeds into the egos of some high rollers (in their own minds) everywhere when they like to show off how good tippers they are in front of their friends.

Can someone explain why we tip on a percentage? It seems stupid.

Why should a server get a bigger tip because I ordered a steak instead of a chicken breast? Why should a server get a smaller tip because I ordered a chicken breast instead of a steak? They do the same amount of work in either case?

I wouldn't mind tipping for any good service, but then you should pay at the end of the process, not before.

Same boat as you. I can't tell you how many restaurants you order at the counter, they flip the little IPAD size terminal with tips screen and pay. Why are they asking me to tip, before I know whether or not I got good service? I absolutely hate this. I decided no tipping before service recently unless it is a place I frequent regularly and service is regularly good.

Can we just pay people decently and do away with tipping altogether? The US is one of the only countries where tipping is almost compulsory.

The Rudy's near my hood has now started asking for a Tip when you pay with a card. The cashiers all of a sudden started telling you that there will be a question show up for you to answer before the transaction will go through. This Rudy's has been there for several years, and has just started this in the last 6 weeks or so.

I pay with a credit card then hit the button on the screen that offers to, "Round up to the nearest dollar" without looking at the total…
