Amazing how several of the girls I've coached in high school, that have gone through college and are now playing overseas (including Russia) have not run afoul of this. Maybe it's because they are not dumb-asses.

And there are girls that you've coached that have done stupid sht.

Easier said than done when Griner was making $1 million over there...hard to turn that down.

No one is questioning that it was idiotic of her to have drugs in her bag in a place like Russia, but the cheering and gleefulness I see from some (many of whom would identify as Christian) celebrating her situation is...disturbing.
I tend to take that internet ******* behavior with a grain of salt. By and large, it's worth the paper it's printed on.

Would have been home in a week if Trump were in office. You can love him or hate him but he knew how to get things done. Currently we're a complete rollover to the Russians.

Lots of dominoes in this scenario. Do we place sanctions on Russia for invading Ukraine if Trump is president? Does Russia invade Ukraine in the first place? "Getting things done" isn't really relevant if those dominoes fall.

I know, I know, take it to F/16.

Remember when the Ball brothers committed similar crimes in China while Trump was president and were home in time for supper?

Breaking the law anywhere exposes you to consequences. Breaking the law in a less than friendly country when the US is unrepresented in the leadership department is plain stupid.

I hope we get her back. I hope we don't trade an arms dealer or some other high level Russian for her. She was a dumbass and broke the law. The woke crowd losing its mind over this is somewhat entertaining however. Morons playing the race/woman/gay card: there are "privileged" people wrongfully imprisoned in Russia and no one gives a crap. We only know about Griner because she can play a sport and is an insufferable SJW. And because she was dumb enough to try to fly with illegal drugs in Russia

I can't stand her at all. But I do think it's a harsh sentence for the crime. No doubt politics and positioning are at play here.

BUT, whether I agree with another country's laws and its sentences or not, they are the laws in that country! Period. If I take a .22 cal bullet into Mexico, I'm toast. Stupid law but it's Mexico's law. She should have to follow the laws of Russia whether she agrees or not!

Quite possibly. This would have have been cleared up with a phone call at a different point in time.

I feel bad for Griner. But one of the biggest complaints about Americans is that they have a tendency to ignore or be ignorant of local laws and customs. Another is that Americans expect special treatment if they get caught. I think both of these apply to Griner.

Knowing Griner publicly disrespected the National Anthem makes it harder for me to feel bad for her. The punishment is ridiculous, in my opinion, but apparently it's on the table in Russia.

If you're going to play the game, boy, you better learn to play it right.

I'm not celebrating her situation. I'm simply not mourning the fact that an American that did not want to be an American got arrested for breaking the law in another country. Do the crime, do the time.

A lot of y'all are Russian to her defense while ignoring the fact that she did break a law

Nobody is defending her and saying what she did was justifiable. You've already made up your mind so you don't want to pay attention to what other people are saying.

She broke the law and deserved to be punished but the sentence she received is disproportionate to the crime and is due to the current political climate between the US and Russia. To say otherwise is ignorant.

It's disproportionate based on our laws and views of marijuana use/possession, the problem is, she is in another country that has their own set of laws and views on it.

There's a political element in play and that's all I'm saying.

I agree with your statement -- it is absolutely political.

But it is hard for me to have any sympathy, and not because I disagree with her on her political stance / anti-American statements. It is because she should know the climate in Russia would certainly NOT afford her any fairness whatsoever!

Would you go to Russia right now?

Possibly. Russia is very strict on drugs. Looked it up and the maximum time she could have got was 10 years, so they cut her a little slack. There was no way she was going to get off with a slap on the wrist, no matter what current state of our relationship with Russia was. I don't she does the full time but you never know.

The nine year sentence has little to do with her crime and a lot more to do with gaining some leverage for a potential prisoner swap. They're not being "tough on crime". They're negotiating.

It's interesting to me how the same people who get so butthurt over people wanting to use different pronouns also love switching them as an insult when talking about people who look different but don't actually want them switched.
