He got 9 years! Damn.
Her mistake being that she was in russia when the US decided to sanction russia and is being exploited as a political prop? Come on. This is far beyond her and anything she did.NoahAg said:

I think it's fair to say that if she indeed brought the THC or whatever into Russia, she made a big mistake doing so. Doesn't mean that the arrest or sentence were justified or that she's not being used as a political prop by the barely-disguised Soviets.Ragnar Danneskjoldd said:Her mistake being that she was in russia when the US decided to sanction russia and is being exploited as a political prop? Definitely not a good idea, but she's more of a hostage than a person paying for a crime.Claude! said:I think it's fair to say that if she indeed brought the THC or whatever into Russia, she made a big mistake doing so. Don't go to other countries, break their laws, and complain that you're getting punished for breaking their laws.Ragnar Danneskjoldd said:Her mistake being that she was in russia when the US decided to sanction russia and is being exploited as a political prop? Probably. Now explain Marc Fogel who got 14 years in Russia for a half ounce (also a prescription) - He's not on any special state department lists, unfortunately.Claude! said:I think it's fair to say that if she indeed brought the THC or whatever into Russia, she made a big mistake doing so. Quite possibly. This would have have been cleared up with a phone call at a different point in time.Jbob04 said:
If she didn't bring drugs into their country, would this be happening?
What planet do you live on? There's several american journalists being held in russian prisons.Jbob04 said:
They aren't going to put an American in prison for no reason. If she wouldnt have had drugs on her, this wouldn't even be a story right now.
No one should ever go to a place where bad things may happen to them. Really good point. So smart.Jbob04 said:
Maybe. They shouldn't have gone to Russia? Don't put yourself in these situations, it's not that hard.
I have the same concern for both. Griner gets the attention because she's a celebrity, no doubt, but frankly that's the way of the world. I'd like to see both of them (and probably a lot of other Americans held in Russian prisons) get out. If there's one bright spot to Griner's arrest, it's that it gives a little more visibility to the plights of Fogel and others.gotsand said:Probably. Maybe Russia isn't the only country using Griner as a political prop?

She's not being punished for breaking a law. She's being held hostage by a rogue state. You know this.
you dont think we have eastern "journalists" at gitmo? nobody was going to accuse griner of being a spy.Ragnar Danneskjoldd said:What planet do you live on? There's several american journalists being held in russian prisons.Jbob04 said:

That's what I've been saying this whole time.Quote:
I definitely don't like the idea of Griner, or any other American, rotting in a Russian prison
I think it's people saying basically the same thing, but talking past each other.Stat Monitor Repairman said:That's what I've been saying this whole time.Quote:

People be mad though.
A bunch of hardasses on here.
problem she has is that she forgot the reality that once you leave the US, the foreign country you visit's law AND politics apply. Good idea to keep your nose squeaky clean.Ragnar Danneskjoldd said:

Maybe no one knows who they are so there's no point in making a spectacle out of them?racerfink said:Ragnar Danneskjoldd said:

Amazing how several of the girls I've coached in high school, that have gone through college and are now playing overseas (including Russia) have not run afoul of this. Maybe it's because they are not dumb-asses.
Easier said than done when Griner was making $1 million over there...hard to turn that down.Claude! said:
Agreed, though I'd say just don't go to Russia as an American.
