Who here knows anything about the music programs at A&M? I've heard the University is planning to offer some legit music major courses but I don't know anyone that's got actual experience with that department.

The Academics board seems mostly a "how can I get my kid accepted?" forum and doesn't have as much traffic as this one. You people seem to have diverse experiences and majors and some of you have kids in college. Maybe you know something?

Someone today told me their kid might be interested in majoring in music at A&M and did I know anything about the program. No, not so much. I don't.

For your troubles, a video of a guitar player who can shred.

It might as well be when you're paying back the student loan debt that gets forgiven because Naivleey can't get a job after graduation.

In the 90s the alumni and leadership were adamant that A&M would never offer music degrees or a School of Music.

That was basically the death knell for Virginia Tech's Corps of Cadets. I wonder if our leadership has forgotten those lessons or just think they're smarter than VT.

Not sure about degree plans, but there are several bands, choirs, and a cappella groups.

There is also a theatre company in BCS that performs musicals.

Or maybe our leadership gas grown to realize the value of quality music programs vs. living in the 50's.

"Majoring in Music" can mean several things. Do they want to focus on performance, teaching, therapy, etc? I ask because schools that have a music program tend to be good at 1 or 2 areas of music study, but not all, and it would help them narrow down where to apply to. For example, for performance they should probably focus on conservatory programs first, but also apply to other schools as a backup.

My son is a Music Education major and just finished his freshman year at SHSU. When looking at universities to apply to, we were surprised to find that A&M offers no degree program even close to what he was looking for.

He ended up applying to SHSU, UH, UT, FL, and Vanderbilt. His college applications process was MUCH more difficult and lengthy than any of his HS friends. In addition to the regular college admission stuff he also had to do multiple live / virtual / recorded audtions and interviews, and had to create a resume showing any pieces he had performed and bios on his instructors (private lessons, conductors, band directors). It was a multiple round process at most of the schools he applied to.

In the old days, North Texas was known for their music programs.

UNT is still known for their music program. It's tremendous.

Also, for those who think music degrees are worthless, imagine any TV shows, movies, or commercials without music. Sporting events would have no soundtrack. No point in car sound systems, because even the lowest form of music, bro-country, couldn't be produced.

Yea, but do you need to drop $150K on a music degree to play, record or edit music? The answer is no. Look around at the most popular artists, DJ's, recording studios and song writers...literally 5% may have attended college - and if so, doubtful it was for music.

Is that where music comes from? Academia? Its a scam degree for suckers, and adults pushing children into debt to get a music degree from any school that isn't Julliard, or maybe one of the california schools that has direct ins to the entertainment industry, should probably feel bad about themselves.

I say this as a sucker with a scam degree. Not just music though, i would guess over half the degrees offered by A&M are scam degrees for suckers.

I know somebody sending daughter to a top music program out of state. No idea what it costs but he wasn't happy about it.

Look at the artist on the cover and then look at the people behind the production. There are a lot of people in the music business with degrees. Producing is way more complicated than it seems.

Watch some of Rick Beato's videos and tell me producing music is easy. Almost every professional musician he interviews has a music degree also.

Try to keep DJ's out of the discussion about musicians.

I don't think producing music is easy. I don't think writing literature is easy. I don't think roofing is easy. None need a college degree program. If you've got the money and time, go for it. But people shouldn't be allowed to go into debt for it, because no lending institution would give you a reasonable loan for it without government interference.

People that excel and succeed in music are incredibly focused on music to an obsessive willing to suffer being poor for decades degree AND are very talented with it without or bigoted formal education.

An engineering school has as much business having a music program as a hospitality program.

Music is a waste of time, but we have just a tad more that's useful than just engineering…
