When Chet Atkins and Roy Clark are just sitting there in awe of you - well, that's something else.

I LOVE Glen Campbell. I don't know why I always kind of cast him off as an early "Nashville production" for so long. Probably because of the cheesiness of Rhinestone Cowboy, but not his greatest hits record gets more play in the house than any other record I have.

Guys like Jerry Reed, Glen Campbell, Brad Paisley & Roy Clark may get dismissed because they are country.... but those guys can shred the guitar on par with any rock god like EVH, Hendrix, SRV, etc.

Loved the special on Glen Campbell right before he passed. Was sad to watch but he still was an amazing musician.

I'm an old. Still have the Southern Nights 45. I must have listened to it 1000 times. Not his best song obviously but it's how I was introduced to his music.

I think people either forget or don't know that Campbell was a session musician with the Wrecking Crew (look them up) before hitting it big as a solo musician. His musicianship was very well documented before his country stardom. He even played on The Beach Boys Pet Sounds (universally believed to be one of the best albums of all time).

He is ridiculously good guitar player. I've seen a video of him picking up nearly every instrument in the studio and just killing it. Guitar, bass, banjo, keyboards, bagpipes, etc. Amazing musician.

Watched a documentary on the Wrecking Crew a few months ago that was great titled appropriately enough,, "The Wrecking Crew". Those guys and girls were the musicians of the Playlist of our lives. The instruments on Pet Sounds were all Wrecking Crew. Brian Wilson wrote the words and music but the Beach Boys weren't musicians.

Quite a bit of talent on that stage.

He was sick as hell here but could still play.

Campbell's song about his dementia (I'm not gonna miss you) that he released towards the end will break your heart.

He didn't write it, but he killed it. Best line of any song.

Brad Pussley is country??!! He wouldn't make a wart on a monkey's butt compared to the others!

The most amazing thing to me - Glen Campbell didn't know how to read music.

Quote:

"It seemed like he could play any genre of music. He could do The Mamas And The Papas and he could do Andy Williams or Frank Sinatra. It was easy, he could learn a song in two seconds. He didn't read music, but he would hear it and then, boom, he would start out."

He plays what passes for country these days. Anyway, he can play the hell out of a guitar.

Late in his life, Roy Clark looked like a lesbian aunt who'd had a ton of work done:

Looks like a few of you have never seen Brad Paisley in concert. The guy is an incredible guitar player and writes his own songs - admittedly some cheesy ones. But a singer songwriter that is a great musician and has a fiddle and steel guitar in the band... the guy is more country than anything that has been produced in the last decade.

Didn't help that Roy Clark was on hee haw. A lot of his comedic talents distracted from showing off the virtuoso on the guitar that he was

Yeah, but even then the stuff he did on that show was pretty nuts.

And I had to pull out my copy of him playing Malaguena. The guitar had to have been smoking at the end of that...

Paisley is a cheese dick and his music sucks, regardless of his guitar playing. Those other dudes are legends.

Fair point. I should have clarified I meant music produced for mainstream country radio. There is plenty of good country music out there.

I think of this song when I'm with my parents now and I hear the same story for the 5th time. It helps me remember them and not get frustrated.

Roy Clark absolutely shredding Malaguena on an acoustic for The Odd Couple. The frame rate of regular studio cameras couldn't keep up with his right hand.

Glenn Campbell was pretty good friends with Alice Cooper. Cooper introduced a young Eddie Van Halen to Campbell, because EVH wanted to meet his idol.

Yeah, but could he march?
