In 25 years I have been the absolute worst jewelry person for her. Actually just a bad gift guy overall. And you are absolutely correct.
However, I hit a damn homerun this year!
Her mom passed away 11 years ago and my dad died 6 years ago. At Thanksgiving we were reliving some fun times we had. She happened to mention how her Mom loved living Near the beach in Corpus and loved sand dollars.
I bought her a custom made gold sand dollar for one of her moms necklaces.
Best gift I have ever given her.

It's not rocket science

It's about the effort, not the gift.

One year the wife wanted some boots but I don't know anything about ladies boots so I just gave her some cash. I taped $250 one dollar bills together end to end and rigged them in an old shoebox so that when she pulled a note that said "Pull me" all the bills would start coming out Kleenex style...if Kleenexes were all attached to one another obviously.

She loved it. Granted, I kind of dropped ball this year but every now and then I knock it out of the park.
